GEORGE, SOUTH AFRICA – Residents are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and take part in a community-driven river cleanup initiative set to take place in the Camphersdrift riverine area on Saturday, 21 March 2026.
The cleanup, organised by the Camphersdrift River Park Initiative in partnership with GARDAG, will be held near Heatherlands High School from 08:30 to 12:00. The event forms part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and restore the Camphersdrift river environment.
Importantly, the initiative coincides with both Human Rights Day and World Water Day, highlighting the vital connection between environmental care, community wellbeing, and access to clean water.
Organisers say the project has received strong backing from local partners, including PPP Precast Panel Products and Bok Bakke Skips, whose support has made the cleanup possible. Additional assistance will be provided by the Community Policing Forum, as well as neighbourhood watches from Dormehlsdrift, King George, and Camphersdrift (CGH).
Community members of all ages are invited to participate. Even those unable to commit to the full cleanup are welcome to visit the greenbelt area, learn more about the initiative, and engage with organisers about ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
Participants are encouraged to bring gardening gloves, hats, drinking water, and a spirit of community involvement.
