Lexus RC F-reeks

0

Ford Kuga ST-Line EcoBoost AWD Auto

0
Start Believing!

The more recent history of the Ford Kuga in South Africa at least has been concentrated on rather hot peripheral issues that have done much to tarnish the image of Henry’s mid-size SUV which is a shame as this latest iteration is a very fine example of the genre.

Before I delve into the specifics as to exactly what goes into this SUV to make it such a worthy prospect, allow me to get my fetish for detail out of the way. I’ve always maintained that if a manufacturer pays attention to detail, the chances are good that the same level of attention has been paid in hidden places elsewhere. So, hats off to Ford for spending a little extra money and lining the inner door window frames to hide all signs of paintwork. Take my word for it; there are very few cars in this class with this feature.

This latest Kuga underwent a notable makeover late in 2018. The test unit sported metallic white paint that had been applied with due care and attention and fussy owners would be very pleased with the gloss levels. They’d be even more pleased with the very narrow panel gaps that for the most part match the best in the industry.

Details, some of them unique to the ST badge (Titanium is no more) which in Kuga-speak telegraphs sporting overtones at least in terms of aesthetic values as opposed to mechanical tweaks, include anthracite cross bars in the main grille which stands proud of a horizontal, black-trimmed lower grille. The black theme extends to roof rails and a rear “diffuser” as well as to optional, flash, multi-spoke alloys that are home to substantial 235/45R19 rubber. A ride height that’s lowered by 10mm adds to the sporty overtones but barely affects the ride comfort as we shall establish in a jiffy. Bumpers are body colour and feature park sensors front and rear while a camera also sees service to assist with backing-up. On a related subject, the fact that “clap hands” wipers are employed up front greatly improves forward vision in rain or when dew has left its footprint. I wish that more manufacturers used this wiper config which not only sweeps more glass, it also ensures that no changes are needed for left or right hand drive.

Now to the interior. The seats, fully-powered in the driver’s case, are covered in a mix of alcantara and leather and provide decent support and posture. A mix of soft-touch and hard plastics is used inside along with high grade carpeting and a smart roof lining to create a pleasant ambience. Other niceties include keyless entry/start, full air con, electric windows, airbags in every nook and cranny, auto open-close tailgate, electric hand brake, dipping mirror, power points and USB ports, lots of oddments receptacles and more.

Where this Kuga truly scores is in its driving dynamics. The underpinnings are hardly new but it’s rare for Ford’s chassis gurus not to get things right first time, so the enduring quality of the Kuga in dynamic terms comes as no surprise. Despite those relatively large, low-profile tyres, the ride quality is out of the top drawer, offering a marvellously-judged blend of pliancy and control which means the driver can enjoy throwing the Kuga into a roundabout while passengers’ butts will be cossetted when the road surface gets rougher.

Where I suspect the engineers have been at work is in improving overall refinement. Other than on coarse chippings, the isolation of tyre roar is most effective and the suspension goes about its business with uncanny stealth. Further, wind noise, other than around the folding wing mirrors which can generate some rustle, is rebuffed with aplomb, and on the cruise the 2.0 turbo petrol mill keeps its presence pleasingly distant.

Only when under load does the 177kW/340Nm four sound a trifle strained and, dare I say it, just a little coarse, but in return, it offers lively and effortless thrust, doubtless a function of the torque peak arriving at just 2 000 rpm and holding all the way to 4 500 rpm. For the record, the motor spins at a mere 2 050 rpm at 120 km/h which explains just why the Kuga’s cruise disposition is so good, and if you must know, the 0-100 sprint is despatched in 7.8 s. More importantly, fuel consumption in an urban environment can be a tad heavy, with a figure of around 12.2l/100km being most common, but a fair bit of motorway driving which cut the thirst to around 8.5l/100km, resulted in a week-long average of 10.9l/100km which is perfectly reasonable.

The brakes proved to be seamless in all respects, offering powerful retardation and a perfectly-judged level of assistance at lower speeds which made feathered stops a cinch. The 6-speed auto box, complete with useful paddle shifters, also proved to be a most pleasing companion.

The Kuga has to push many obstacles aside if it’s to regain all the ground lost in recent times, but on the strength of this showing, it deserves to attract lots of showroom traffic because it combines truly excellent driving dynamics with a well-judged blend of style, space and practicality at a competitive price. It’s time to believe again!

Audi Q3 35 TFSI S Tronic

0

Projecting a premium image has been an Audi priority in its battle to retain or lure customers away from its two German rivals, but the reality is that over time, “lesser” brands have upped their game and closed the gap in perception terms to Ingolstadt’s stepping stone models, not least the compact Q3.

The arrival of a new Q3 therefore couldn’t come soon enough and having sampled two versions of Audi’s brand new compact SUV, there’s absolutely no doubt the bar has been raised such that the premium genes are readily evident.

Three models are available, all powered by the familiar 110kW/250Nm1.4 TFSI motor driving the front wheels through a brilliantly smooth and responsive 6-speed S tronic automated box. Any fears that the slightly longer and wider but shallower Q3 might overwhelm this engine can be put to rest as the encouraging torque peak holds all the way from a mere 1 500 rpm until the mid-three thousands.

This ensures that open road cruising is a doddle and that mid-range urge is always on hand, characteristics enhanced by the very effective isolation of mechanical disturbances from the cabin. Expect more firepower sometime in 2020 but for now, have no qualms about that relatively small mill.

Apart from mechanical refinement, the new Q3 also repels wind noises to good effect, albeit that the large wing mirrors do generate some rustle in strong crosswinds. Road noise too is contained with aplomb other than on the coarsest tar, so count refinement as a Q3 strong suit.

The Q3 also dealt with gravel roads very competently but both cars driven incorporated the optional and desirable 6-mode chassis dynamics package which in “comfort” mode will have helped ward off the nasties. The steering too is pleasingly weighted and nicely responsive, but again this function is influenced by the workings of the aforementioned dynamics package.

In an attempt to reduce configuration muddles, three model ranges are presented in Standard, Advanced and S line form with each sporting distinctive equipment packages that are more generous than of old. Please consult the Audi SA website for full details but be aware that an extensive options list can still add significantly to the price.

What is new as standard, is a digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster allied to a central infotainment 8.8-inch touch screen display but for tech fans, the virtual “plus” system with crystal-clear, bigger dual screens and greater functionality including nav is almost a must even if functionality seems complex on first acquaintance.

Interior ambience and finish, with the exception of hard plastics in mostly hidden lower areas, is top notch and comfort levels high, even for those in the back who can move the 20:40:20 seat fore and aft by 150mm while still leaving a minimum luggage area of 530 litres.

And as you’d expect, external finish is industry-leading and makes the sharper, more sporty lines and imposing new grille stand out to good effect. Without a doubt, the new Q3 has raised the bar, offering improved dynamics and practicality along with excellent refinement and a somewhat daunting price tag that starts out at R565 000.

Successful repair restores full water capacity to Wilderness

Issued George Municipality, 24 October 2019Executive Mayor, Melvin Naik today thanked all stakeholders and the affected communities of Wilderness and surrounds for their role in the massive undertaking to replace the main water supply line which runs across the Kaaiman’s Railway Bridge after two sections of the pipeline fell into the river on Sunday 6 October. Last week in a statement, Ald Naik had expressed his concern for the affected  consumers reiterating that the Civil Engineering Department was doing everything possible to resolve the matter as quickly as possible but that the co-operation of the water users in reducing their daily consumption was vital throughout the process. “I was extremely gratified that the repair was completed a day earlier than predicted, Friday 18 October and we were able to stabilize the water system for the entire Wilderness area over the past weekend. Service delivery remains a high priority for the George Municipality and the success of this repair was down to strong inter-governmental relationships and collaboration,” said Ald Naik.Given the location of the repair, intensive pre-planning was required including the necessary permissions for the access to and installation of the pipeline on the bridge which had to be obtained from Transnet, owner of the bridge. Transnet also assisted by allowing the use of the railway line and providing a rail truck and trolley for the transporting of the materials and equipment from the level crossing near Carmel to the railway bridge. The rail truck is a modified truck that can operate on both road and rail. The bridge and access to the bridge was inspected and a Safety Report and Plan was compiled and submitted to the Department of Labour. The safety plan required that safety clearance be given for the bridge by a structural Engineer. The plan stipulated in detail the required safety measures for the execution of the work. Working on Fire provided their High Altitude teams (HAT) to install the safety measures on the bridge before the actual installation of the pipeline could commence. Public access to the bridge is and remains prohibited due to the unsafe conditions and the bridge remains blocked off at each end with Transnet signage to that effect which remains in place. The walkway to which the existing pipeline was attached, is heavily corroded, and caused sections of the pipeline to fall off the bridge. The safety conditions, height and wind factor meant that only the Garden Route District Municipality High Altitude team was cleared to access the bridge and they were given basic training in the installation and laying of the pipeline. The length of pipeline installed is 180m, i.e 30 x 6m lengths that were fusion welded together with each pipe length weighing about 110kg. The steel piping was replaced with HDPE piping (high-density polyethylene) which has a high level of impermeability and a strong molecular bond making it suitable for high pressure pipelines. The installation of the connection to the existing pipeline was done by the main contractor, Qualcon Civils, who also cleared the railway line from debris and overgrown vegetation, provided the training to the GRDM HAT team and provided security at the site.  The temporary pipeline has been installed between the rail tracks, as the walkway to which the existing pipeline was attached, is heavily corroded, which caused sections of the pipeline to fall off the bridge. The Water Treatment Works in Wilderness has a fixed production capacity for treated water and is augmented by the supply of water from George along the railway bridge and Wilderness Heights was the first and worst affected by the incident. The monitoring of the water levels in the 6 reservoirs that service the Wilderness area was a 24 hour job during the 13 day period and initially three water trucks were deployed to provide water to the Wilderness Heights area. As the affected area increased, five water tanks were installed in the Wilderness Heights area and the fleet of trucks was increased to six. At the height of the crisis, the different zones in Wilderness and surrounds were subjected to intermittent water supply, in order to ensure that the available potable water supplied from the Wilderness Water treatment Works was distributed equitably.Director for Civil Engineering, Regenald Wesso thanked the Wilderness residents, the Executive Mayor, Ward Councillor Marlene Barnardt and the Municipal Manager Trevor Botha, for their patience and support during the 13 day period, which allowed the relevant teams to complete the work as quickly as possible. “Our extreme gratitude and thanks goes to all who assisted selflessly on this repair project. Without the input and harnessing of skills of various individuals, companies and institutions and the level of dedication displayed by our officials, a task of this magnitude would have been almost impossible” said Mr Wesso.Henry Jansen, Deputy Director Water and Wastewater for George Civil Engineering Services, ran as the lead on the repair project and lauded the collective efforts of his internal teams, the Wilderness Water Treatment Works officials, the water tanker drivers and water tank teams for their application of the Batho Pele principles and their patience and endurance during a period in which they worked under extreme pressure and long hours.Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha noted special thanks to Transnet; the Garden Route District Municipality Disaster Management and Working on Fire HAT teams; the George Municipality Fire Department, George Municipal Communications Department, OHS Inc, Uhambiso Consult, Qualcon Civils and DPI Trading .  “Going forward we have no detailed future plans available at this stage, but the investigation is at an advanced stage and a report is expected in due course,”said Mr Botha.Chantel Edwards-Klose Communications: Manager Office of the Municipal Manager Office:044 801 9160 Cell:082 350 2420 Email: cedwardsklose@george.gov.za

Imizamo Yethu High Recovered Stolen Equipment

Thanks to Thembalethu Neighbourhood Watch. Items stolen from the school have been recovered after being sold residents in Lawaaikamp, Thembalethu and Parkdene; the items include a laptop, TV screen, computer screen, projector, Wi-Fi device and an electric cord. This occurred because of a burglary earlier this month – when burglars went into the premises through a window and stole a number of electrical appliances.  One of the neighbourhood watch members, Sinethemba Helebe, had this to say: “We are assisting the police and work hand in hand with them. However, we are tired of not seeing results from the police in terms of apprehending criminals. That is why we have decided to take matters into our own hands.”

Go George Route To Thembalethu Still A Battle

0
The implementation of Go George Phase 4A and 4B is on a sensitive stage according to the ministry of Transport. Locations like Lawaaikamp, Borcherds, Parkdene and Conville initially complained that the formal plan was first to implement the Go George buses in Thembalethu before implementing Phase 4B, and therefore expressed their infringement in this regard. Discussions between the Western Cape Department of Transport, Uncedo and the George Community Forum reveal the matters for implementation are far from being resolved. The National Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, has been in contact with the Western Cape MEC for Transport, Bonginkosi Madikizela, to find solutions to this impede situation. A statement released on this states: “the deliberations explored grievances raised by Uncedo Taxi Association and the George Community Forum in previous arrangements. Complaints relate to procurement processes, competition, compensation, infrastructure development and economic opportunities.” The outcome of the meetings from the second last week suggests that a possible way forward within 45 days should be wrought.

Man’s Best Friend and Self Defence

You are out walking your dog in the early hours of the morning. It is almost sunrise and you can feel the morning air breathing new life into the world. Nature comes alive with bird song and the familiar residential rumble of families getting ready to start the day.Even though you enjoy the moment you still do a quick mental check to assure yourself of your safety. This thought would not have crossed your mind if not for the attack last month in your neighborhood. Someone was relieved of their belongings while walking their dog. You also remember the victim being assaulted by the attackers. With this in mind you reach for your pepper spray just to be sure.Suddenly your fears are realized. It starts with a stranger appearing out of nowhere and a friendly greeting that soon turns violent. In the confusion your dog hides behind you. You use the pepper spray but the attacker does not stop. You are in shock and don’t follow the attackers instructions, for this you are beaten. That is how 80% of the stories go. We are all heroes beforehand and would have done so many things differently in hindsight. Do not become a victim of a false sense of security. Remember that your dog looks at your behavior before and during an attack. Most dogs that have not received training will not recognize your distress until you are being attacked. There is a 50/50 chance of an untrained dog making a run for it or not taking the correct action. This could make your situation worse.Remember the dogs we generally see on law enforcement documentaries have been trained to neutralize a threat. Neutralize being the key word. As families we train our dogs to be loving, follow basic commands and guard our properties. If your dog does a great job at guarding your house just remember that it is their territory. On the other side of the fence it is natural ground and your dog will always look at you for direction. (Except for when your dog takes off running through the open gate in a direction and you run down the road in your PJ’s trying to stop them…haha!)Remember the first time you taught your dog how to sit and say thank you? Have you ever taught your dog how to growl, bark on command or fetch help when you are injured? Your dog is so much more than just a pet, friend or one of the furry children. A strong bond and proper training have saved countless lives.Contact a training facility today.
