Volkspod – Dit lyk soos ‘n Kewer-larwe!

0

Specialised jetski will get to drowning people quicker

George Fire and Rescue has recently added a specially modified rescue jetski to its fleet to complement its water rescue capabilities.

George Fire Chief Neels Barnard said the watercraft had been modified to withstand breaking wave conditions and was fitted with a rescue sled. “The 1800cc two-man jetski can get to a drowning person much quicker than rubber dinghies or boats that must be launched, and can manoeuvre around rocky areas where swimming rescuers may not be able to access without endangering themselves.”

Lifeguards crew leader Rico Koen (left) and firefighter Johan Troskie will be manning the municipality’s specialised jetski this summer.

The craft is designed to hold two rescuers: one to operate the jetski and support the rescue from the craft while the other jumps into the water and transfer the drowning person onto the sled. The rescue sled can be strapped to the jetski and the rescuer can continue to help the patient from the back of the craft.

The jetski will be stationed at the busiest beaches this holiday season and will service all six of the municipalities’ beaches and lagoons as is necessary.

Rescue personnel have been specially trained to manoeuvre and use the powerful machine.

George fire gets specialised tractor for firebreaks

The George Municipality Fire Department recently took delivery of a specialised multi-use 4×4 tractor for the clearing of firebreaks across the municipal area. The department had until now shared a general tractor with other departments. The funky new addition to the fleet is designed to access rugged terrain typical of the areas surrounding the George municipal area and is fitted with a specialised blade in front to scrape roads and a brush cutter (bossiekapper) at the back for cutting grass and fine brush. George Fire Station Commander Johann Crouse (left) and Fire Chief Neels Barnard took delivery on behalf of the department.

Raising of Garden Route Dam: Practical Completion Achieved

George Municipality today confirmed the successful Practical Completion of the raising of the Garden Route Dam Wall and the spillway construction which started on 13 May this year. Practical Completion is achieved when the works are considered fit for intended purpose, although all minor works may not be fully completed. For this significant project, the earthworks and concrete works had to be completed to be considered practically functional. Minor re-instatement works are still taking place, but the decision has been made that the site will be open to the public from Saturday 15 December 2019.Executive Mayor Naik reiterated his comments made at the official site opening in June this year when he thanked all the roleplayers involved in the successful Practical Completion. “We remain excited that this is a unique project design and a first for George and the Western Cape. Our ability to increase the storage capacity of our precious resource of water is a positive step in the continued development of George. The early and successful practical completion of this project is commendable. I also urge everyone to continue to use our most threatened natural resource, water, sparingly and wisely. 2B Water Restrictions remain in place for George and surrounds,” said Ald Naik.In order to complete the construction the dam level had to be kept below 75% and when measured on Monday 9th December it stood at 71.54%. Thankfully water only needed to be drawn down in the first few weeks. The dam’s full supply level has been raised by 2.5 metres, which increases the total storage capacity of the dam by approximately 25%. The old crest weir height was 179,94m with a dam capacity of about 10.0 million cubic metres. The new spillway weir height is 182,5m with a storage capacity of 12,5 million cubic metres. The new spillway is approximately 80m in length and varies between 3.7m to 4.7m in height (above existing ground levels) and approximately 400 to 600mm thick at the top of the new spillway wall. The municipality has completed a series of controlled burns to clear alien vegetation in those areas that pose a fire risk surrounding the dam site, with a further burn planned in February 2020 in the area directly surrounding the dam wall area (subject to weather conditions). The planned Cape Agency for Sustainable Integrated Development in Rural Areas (CASIDRA) managed alien vegetation clearing operation for a width of approximately 50m along the stream edge of the Kat and Swart River systems upstream of the dam is expected to start in early 2020.Members of the public are reminded that this area was a major construction site and there may still be areas which require additional rehabilitation work. Use of the area will be solely at the risk of the public, and visitors are requested to proceed cautiously until the site is formally presented back to the Municipality. Newly constructed works should be avoided at all times, and no children or adults must climb onto or over the works. The municipality sincerely thanks the residents for their patience during the construction period and for adhering to the restrictions as this allowed construction to continue without undue interruption and additional safety, financial and program risks. George Municipality hosts Pacaltsdorp Night Race

George Municipality is once again hosting the annual Pacaltsdorp Night Race on 26 December 2019 which is a sporting and fun event for the whole family.Leveinia Botha from the George Municipality Sports Office, said the Pacaltsdorp Night Race is an annual event aimed at developing local athletics, as well as promoting sports. The race falls within the approved SWD athletics calendar. She said it is such a joyful event and she would like to invite locals and visitors  to bring the family and partake in this event. In 2016 the race was named after Elroy Gelant, a local athlete hailing from Pacaltsdorp, in honour of him becoming an olympic athlete in that year. With the development of the sport of athletics in mind it was deemed important to present to the younger athletes a role model to whom they can look up to. Elroy Gelant is a renowned international athlete. His passion for the development of local athletics and his national and international success made it the logical choice for his personal involvement in this initiative. As the race evolved, it became known as the Pacaltsdorp Night Race and Gelant who is currently training overseas is involved in the event when he is in George.“It takes place in the heart of the holiday season and will provide the opportunity for local sellers and entrepreneurs to market and sell their goods. This event has the potential to develop into a major tourist attraction or festival, not only for Pacaltsdorp, but also for the entire George municipal area,” Botha said. The Municipality has been involved in the race since 2015.The time for registration starts at 14:00 at the parking area of the Traffic Department, Mission Street, Pacaltsdorp and there will be no earlier registration process.  The race starts at 18:00 at the Traffic Department. The route starts at the Traffic Department in Mission Street, Pacaltsdorp, left into East Street, left in Foundry Street, left in Poplar Street, right in Kerk Street, left in Beach Road, pass the robot to Heather Road, left in Heather Road, left in Agter Street, right into Kloof, left into Kloof Street, left into Oos Street, left in to Mission Street and ending  at the Traffic Department. The cost for the 8km race is R50 and for the 4km walk R30. TRANSENDURO VISITS GEORGE

0
Seven different groups of which were runners, cyclists and boatsmen from the Military Academy set off from George and Wilderness for the next stage of the annual TransEnduro this morning (3 December 2019). The students handed over a token of appreciation to George Councillor for Community Social Development and Sport, Sean Snyman on behalf of Ald Melvin Naik. Snyman thanked the Military for choosing George as their preferred destination for this trip and as it is World Disability Awareness Day, he mentioned the fact that they are lucky to be healthy and privileged to be taking part in this event. He wished them the best for their journey on their way to Saldanha and handed over a letter of goodwill from the George Mayor that will be handed to the Stilbaai Mayor, after which the cyclists and runners were on their way. A group of the Military stayed behind to do charity work in Thembalethu. Major Beverley Geldenhuys thanked the city for its hospitality and handed a letter of goodwill and a 2020 diary from the Bitou Municipality, the team’s previous stop, to Cllr Snyman.

The TransEnduro is a military tradition dating back to the 1980s in which students from the South African Military run, cycle and sail from Port Elizabeth to the Military Academy in Saldanha. The event is supported by student-based logistics and administration teams and is complemented by a strong community outreach programme and fundraising efforts in the towns they visit.
