It was late afternoon when we made our way to Louvain Guest Farm. This tranquil working farm is situated in the upper Langkloof valley between George and Uniondale. As we turned in at the gate I got that feeling of excitement and adventure. There was a reason for us visiting Louvain, it’s called the Duiwelskop 4×4 Pass, one of the most dangerous and harmful passes of the midst 18th century.We met Michael at reception. He accompanied us to our luxurious resting place for the night. Louvain is the absolute perfect destination for the adventurer, the historian and the romantic. Oor duisende jare het die natuur sy gang geneem om te skep wat vandag algemeen erken word as die Baviaanskloof Wêrelderfenisgebied. Die kloof strek vanaf Willowmore met die Baviaanskloof Berge aan die noorde en die Kouga berge aand die suide kant al tot by Patensie met ‘n totale afstand van net so onder die 200km. Die bewaararea vanaf Zandvlakte tot by Poortjie is egter slegs toeganklik vir 4×4 voertuie. Epic 4×4 het besluit om die gedeelte tussen Willowmore en Zandvlakte uit te sny en ons op ‘n 4×4 avontuur oor die berg vanaf Kareedouw, bekend as die Baviaans-Kouga 4×4 roete tot by Doringkloof sowat 10km vanaf die ingang van die bewaararea te neem.EN SO BEGIN ONS AVONTUUROns kom bymekaar by die pragtige luukse Assegaaibosch Country Lodge net buite Kareedouw, met hulle netjiese kamers, swembad om bietjie af te koel, lieflike kroeg en eet area met vriendelike personeel. Ons sit aan vir ‘n heerlike aandete terwyl ons mekaar ontmoet en die roete bespreek.
Die volgende oggend na ‘n lekker ontbyt vat ons die berg aan met ons 4×4 Voertuie al die pad tot by Doringkloof. Uniek en asemrowend is die Fynbos Ingang van die Kloof. Die roete wat ongeveer 78km lank is met ‘n 2/3 gradering kronkel vanaf Kareedouw op teen die Kouga Bergreeks tot in die Baviaanskloofvallei. Dit was n warm dag op die roete maar ons het ‘n lekker koelte boom gevind, waar ons ‘n vinnige peusel happie kon geniet. Verder geniet ons die verskeidenheid plantegroei, insluitend ‘n broodboom of twee wat honderde jare oud is.
Laat middag arriveer ons almal veilig en ongedeurd by Doringkloof, ons tente is reeds opgeslaan deur Epic 4×4 op die pragtige groen grasperk met lieflike skoon ablusie geriewe en die vure wat reeds brand. Ons pak af en maak bed vir die aand terwyl die reuk van braaivleis, vars gebakte brood, mielepap en sous ons nader lok. Almal word rustig en geniet ‘n knertsie langs die vuur terwyl Kalbas en Shorty van Epic 4×4 ons aandete voorberei. Na ete word lekker stories uitgeruil oor die dag, Ernie se snuif masjien word uitgetoets wat sorg vir baie pret en lekker lag, ons geniet melktertjies vir ‘n “nightcap” (resep vir Melktertjies in volgende uitgawe van Ultimate Lifestyle). Na ‘n goeie nagrus, lekker koffie op die vuur en ‘n heerlike ontbyt is ons almal gereed vir die Baviaans.
Ons vat die pad deur die bewaararea met meer as 1200 verskillende plantspesies waarvan 32 bedreigde spesies en 26 spesies wat nêrens anders in die wêreld voorkom nie. Met 56 reptiel spesies waarvan 23 slegs in Suid-Afrika en 3 slegs in die Baviaans voorkom, amper 300 verskillende voël spesies, 17 amfibiese en 15 visspesies asook ‘n verskeidenheid boksoorte soos die duiker, bosbok, kudu, eland, grysbok, klipspringer, berg zebra, rooi hartebeest, buffel en die beroemde stoute Bobbejane van die Baviaans is daar soveel om voor uit te kyk. Volgende stop Rooihoek… waar Kalbas ons toergids van Epic 4×4 reg staan met middagete. Rooihoek wilderniskampeerterrein met 5 kampplekke bied natuurlike swemplek in die Kruisrivier omring deur ‘n uitgestrekte wit sandstrand, daar het ons almal lekker ontspan, geeët en afgekoel in die water na ‘n warm dag voordat ons terug keer na Doringkloof, net die die regte tyd om nog ‘n paar bokke te sien in die laat middag son.
Terug by ons kamp het daar liplekker potjiekos, rys, slaai en stroopsoet waatlemoen vir ons gewag. Nadat ons die stof afgewas het, het ons lekker gesmul aan die aandete wat Shorty vir ons voorberei het. Sondag oggend het ons na ‘n volmaag ontbyt gegroet en elkeen het sy eie koers ingeslaan. Op die vraag wat sal jy anders doen die volgende keer, was die meeste se reaksie, “dit was n wondelike ervaring en wanneer hou ons reünie”!! Ons was ‘n kein groepie maar ons het vining vriende geraak, lekker gelag, heerlik geëet en ‘n opwindende avontuur meegemaak!! Daar is dus nie ‘n tekort aan Kewers op ons paaie nie, ook nie juis ‘n tekort aan parte nie. Om Kewer parte op te sny en vir iets anders te gebruik is seker iets wat Kewer-liefhebbers en puriste met afgryse sal vervul, tog bring hierdie klein motorfietsie ooglopend hulde aan sy oorspronklike herkoms!
Die ontwerper is Brent Walter van Indiana in die VSA, wat self ‘n liefde vir die ou Kewers het. Tydens die restourasie van een van sy Kewers was ‘n paar modderskerms oor. Dié het hy gebruik om sy sweiswerk op die dun metaal te oefen. Die modderskerms kom mooi bymekaar, kompleet met plek vir die Kewer voor- en agterlig. Net daar is die idee gebore om ‘n klein motorfietsie te bou wat hy kon saamneem na die klassieke Volkswagen Motorskoue.
Die naam van die fietsie is die Volkspod, afgelei van sy vorm. Die stillering is eenvoudig gehou, rond, met ‘n Schwinn sitplek en wye handvatsels wat herhinder aan die fietse van die sestigs. Selfs die VW kenteken het behoue gebly. Onder die bakwerk is ‘n klein selfgeboude motorfietsie, basies ‘n raam, twee wiele en ‘n 79cc enjin wat jy algemeen in tuin implemente kry. Ook die verf is oorspronklik gehou, Berk Groen. Die gewildheid van die gedoente het Brent Walter heel onkant gevang. Gou is hy gevra om ‘n tweede model te bou. Dié motorfiets, in Pastel Blou, was toegerus met ‘n 212cc enjin en groter wiele wat die ryery op gras by motorskoue baie vergemaklik het.
Brent se Instagram wys hoe hy die fietsie gebou het. Sedertdien het verskeie weergawes al op die internet verskyn, insluitend Minion en Herbie weergawes. Ek is seker dat hierdie ontwerp selfs die kewer se ontwerper, Ferdinand Porsche, se goedkeuring sou wegdra. Lank lewe die Kewer en die nuwe Volkspod larwes!

George Fire and Rescue has recently added a specially modified rescue jetski to its fleet to complement its water rescue capabilities.
George Fire Chief Neels Barnard said the watercraft had been modified to withstand breaking wave conditions and was fitted with a rescue sled. “The 1800cc two-man jetski can get to a drowning person much quicker than rubber dinghies or boats that must be launched, and can manoeuvre around rocky areas where swimming rescuers may not be able to access without endangering themselves.”
Lifeguards crew leader Rico Koen (left) and firefighter Johan Troskie will be manning the municipality’s specialised jetski this summer.
The craft is designed to hold two rescuers: one to operate the jetski and support the rescue from the craft while the other jumps into the water and transfer the drowning person onto the sled. The rescue sled can be strapped to the jetski and the rescuer can continue to help the patient from the back of the craft.
The jetski will be stationed at the busiest beaches this holiday season and will service all six of the municipalities’ beaches and lagoons as is necessary.
Rescue personnel have been specially trained to manoeuvre and use the powerful machine.
The George Municipality Fire Department recently took delivery of a specialised multi-use 4×4 tractor for the clearing of firebreaks across the municipal area.The department had until now shared a general tractor with other departments. The funky new addition to the fleet is designed to access rugged terrain typical of the areas surrounding the George municipal area and is fitted with a specialised blade in front to scrape roads and a brush cutter (bossiekapper) at the back for cutting grass and fine brush.
