Volvo XC60 with Volvo on Call

The Volvo XC60 has been around for a while, and ever since its launch in 2017, the XC60 has been racking up award after award. One of the most recent, and on local soil, was the award for Best Premium SUV/Crossover at the annual CAR’s Top 12 Best Buys Awards. The most notable was its World Car of the Year victory in 2018 – this is, after all, the world’s ultimate motoring accolade. So why then do we get to drive the Volvo XC60 again if it was launched in 2017 already? Well, to introduce Volvo On Call. Volvo On Call is an innovative app-based service that helps motorists to communicate with their cars and has been available since late last year in South Africa. With Volvo On Call, motorists can remotely lock or unlock the doors to their car, check the fuel level from their office desk, and cool or heat their car before they get it – and they can do this all via their smartphone, smartwatch, tablet or desktop! The app gives Volvo drivers control over their car’s functions and also provides access to a world of convenient services. With Volvo On Call, the car becomes far more than just a means of travel. It becomes your personal assistant. It knows when you have appointments, where they are, and how to get you there. If you forget to lock your car it will send you a notification message. And Volvo On Call automatically contacts the emergency services if you are involved in an accident and tells them where you are.Anyone who has ever lost track of their car in a huge parking lot will also welcome Volvo On Call with open arms. The app will show you the location of your car on a high-definition map, and then provide directions on how to reach it. You can even ask your car to hoot and flash for five seconds to identify itself and guide you to its location. Another useful feature is the ability to provide an in-car WiFi hotspot, which can be accessed by everyone in your car enabling them to stream music and movies. And best of all? It will make you a cup of coffee! Well, not yet… Unfortunately. But it can tell you about the best coffee spots in town and send the destination to your car’s navigation system. The Volvo XC60 T6 Geartronic AWD R-Design we tested is fitted with a 2.0L Four-cylinder Super & turbocharged petrol delivering 235kW and 400Nm through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It’s list price is R 882,700 including 15% VAT, a 5-year / 100,000 km warranty and a 5-year / 100,000 km full maintenance plan.Volvo On Call is a standard feature in South Africa with effect from model year 2020 Volvo derivatives.

Suave and serene Swede

The latest model from Gothenburg to grace my driveway was the upper-end, recently tweaked XC90 T6 painted in the most fetching champagne shade that does so much to enhance its neat and simple styling that is largely devoid of any frills and attention-grabbing add-ons. Now here is a car that is awash with neat detailing, which now includes a revised grille design and flash alloys, so read on to find out exactly what sets it apart from the herd.

The fact that the paint was blessed with the most eye-pleasing gloss simply adds to the honest-to-goodness execution of a two-box shape that sports a little more chrome than might be expected. The side window surrounds are outlined in shiny stuff as is the grille, the lower reaches front, side and rear, as well as the roof rails and door handles.

If that sounds like overkill, it isn’t as the tinsel is subtly applied and blended in well with the paler colour of the test unit, albeit that darker hue would make the chrome’s presence more obvious.

There’s no doubt that the exterior design is imposing and despite its relative simplicity, it does draw attention, and most of it is very positive. My neighbour gave this Swede the nod of approval when it arrived in my driveway, but the nod became much even more pronounced when I took him and his better half for an evening nosh some 20km away. It’s said that first impressions are lasting impressions and just as I did, my neighbour took in a deep breath to soak up the truly delightful aroma generated by the soft, beautifully stitched leather that swathes all six seats.

This test unit featured an all-black interior and while I favour the more “Swedish” paler colours on offer, the dark hue does not unduly mask the quality of the trim materials on parade. From the panelled inserts used on the dash and upper door surfaces to the high-quality carpets and over mats, to the lovely fabric that makes up the roof lining and even to the slush moulded lower door panelling, the XC90 is up with the very best.

Not only do those seats look so inviting, but the front pair also provide three-way memory and reward with excellent support just where it matters. If you were paying attention, you will have seen reference to “six seats.” This is a new and very sensible option that allows access to the tail-end pews between the two separate middle row buckets. Thanks in part to the sheer size of the XC90, a model that could best be described as a Crossover, being a blend of station wagon and SUV, that third row provides more space than most of the opposition which means it’s not just a place for kids to smear their sticky treats in.

Medium-sized adults won’t feel trapped back there and what’s more, even with all seats in position, there’s still more than 300 litres of luggage space, and this can be extended so easily thanks to a wonderfully simple and variable seat folding system that releases a cavernous 1856 litres if rows two and three are liberated.

As I’ve covered various XC90 models before, I won’t go into my usual detail about every item of internal equipment other than to state that the rather-too-complex central infotainment screen – now with Android Auto, Apple Car Play and Spotify – helps immeasurably in allowing for simplicity of execution in terms of dashboard styling. Connectivity freaks will have nothing to complain about and sound geeks will love the melodious tones produced by the Bowers & Wilkins sound system. The boss of the Bank of England will also feel as safe as a house in the XC90 thanks to the almost unrivalled array of active and passive safety aids on board.

And let me say how much I appreciated the active camera system which provides an overhead view of the car’s precise position in relation to its surroundings. Given the rather impaired rear three-quarter visibility, this makes reversing an absolute cinch.

Naturally, all electrically powered mod cons are on board along with various driving modes. On the subject of driving dynamics, this big Swede is all about tranquillity notwithstanding the fact that its turbocharged 2.0 four produces an unexpectedly healthy 235kW at a mere 5 700 rpm backed up by a 400Nm torque peak that holds all the way from 2 200 to 5 400 rpm. All that muscle lurking under the imposing bonnet allows for an athletic 6.5s run to 100 and liberates a 230km/h top whack.

So, despite the bulk of the XC90, that motor never feels as if it’s having its work cut out and despite the fact that boost levels must be rather high to achieve such a healthy power output, it’s also mostly free of noticeable lag and allows for very high gearing in the wonderfully smooth 8-speed auto. As for braking, the anchors are powerful and perfectly weighted and never seem taxed dealing with such a large vehicle.

This test unit ran on lovely black and polished alloys wrapped with huge 275/45 R20 rubber. Despite the relatively low profile, and maybe thanks primarily to the use of air suspension, the XC90 provides a lovely cushioned ride that’s not achieved at the expense of body roll. Road roar, even on coarse tar, is subdued as is wind noise and provided the extremes of the considerable engine performance are not exploited, mechanical commotion is also deflected with aplomb.

Heaven forbid that anyone should want to take such a beautifully executed vehicle off the straight and narrow, but I guess that’s what a Crossover/SUV is all about, so the presence of AWD will be a boon to those with a more adventurous spirit. What’s more, the relatively high riding chassis will ensure that pretty nasty obstacles won’t stand in the way of the XC90.

Premium is a word that’s so over-used in the motoring context but it’s a descriptor that fits the XC90 quite perfectly, especially as there’s nothing flash-harry about the disposition of this model. There’s an element of simplicity and understatement at play along with a cosseting interior design execution that separates the Swede from its (primarily) German rivals.

Life is Living

We at Radio CSA (https://radiocsa.co.za/) had the privilege of conducting an interview with David May from Life Community Services. As we all know, the Corona Virus pandemic has had a lot of impact on many businesses and organisations, including Life Community Services. Changes had to be made and the challenges called for adjustments in how to meet the need of the community as well.LIFE Community Services is a Christian NGO working to confront the dilemmas and crisis facing impoverished children in South Africa today. We work primarily in the Garden Route city of George. https://www.lifecommunity.co.za/about/How did we handle the challenges these last few months? Due to Corona and the lockdown in South Africa, Life Community had to modify what we do to accomplish our objectives of reaching the children. There was no immediate plan, as all our centres were closed and our staff were not allowed out unless they were deemed an essential service. The only permits we could get as an NPO was for our two drivers. Our initial plan was to ask volunteers to make sandwiches in their homes, which were then collected by the drivers and taken to the communities to feed the children at the different stations. This operation grew from feeding on average 100 – 150 children daily in the first week of lockdown, to now feeding approximately 1500 children daily at 11 different food stations. At each lockdown level, we have had to require permits from the local municipality to operate. However, God has been faithful, we have seen the incredible generosity of the many, who have donated finances, food and prayers to support us. We salute and thank each one of the many! We are stronger together.

Our way forward?

Life will continue to live and be a bright shining light of hope to the community. Our Life Team, staff, are committed to impacting and making a difference in George and our country. So I invite you as individuals, families, churches, businesses and corporates to stand in the gap with us, to continue to live. We are stronger together! This is our commitment to you.

We at Life will continue to –

  • Laugh loudly
  • Work diligently
  • Speak honestly
  • Encourage lovingly
  • Pray constantly
  • Give generously
  • Forgive graciously
  • Serve cheerfully
  • Worship joyfully

BORCHARDS STAAN SAAM

Getting to know the Local Motion team, they stand out as a Team passionate about the community. Their vision is to “create a platform for motivated youth from vulnerable communities to reach their fullest potential & make a positive change within their community“. They want to see leaders raised up in their local community to take a stand for what is right and bring God into their areas.Sabrina Horn, one of the leaders at Local Motion, said that through Local Motion they want to reach out to the youth, cultivate an active lifestyle in them, get them out of their communities and have them develop a passion for the Word of God. How Local Motion do this, is through engaging the youth in local activities such as surfing and hiking. Community involvement is also a priority and local clean-ups are also done from time to time. Going to church is a priority and making their own Veggie Gardens is also something they enjoy.Their last event was on the 10th of August, during which they had a walk through Borchards, to take a stand against drug addictions, violence and the youth getting involved in the wrong things. – Sabrina HornVir meer inligting oor Local Motion en plaaslike geleenthede waarby hulle betrokke is, besoek en volg gerus hulle Social Media blaaie: Facebook: Local Motion Instagram: localmotionzaThey are planning on having more of these types of walks in the communities. Journaling, Time management and achieving Success

This article was written by Dr Francois du Toit, as per the interview done with Radio CSA (https://radiocsa.co.za/).“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” – Abraham Lincoln The idea of journaling might sound like a slightly childish exercise to some and may conjure up pictures of the “dear diary” troubled years of a teenage girl. The fact of the matter is that there is a real skill involved in the process of solidifying the ideas you have in your mind, and writing them down to form a doable plan and then finally achieving it!Without the correct training, the initial journaling attempts may feel awkward at first, but with the correct guidance, this will eventually accelerate the process to help you achieve nearly any task you set your mind to.The basis of keeping a journal to achieve success is not about writing down every thought that comes up in your mind, although that by itself can be surprisingly revealing. It’s actually a process of prioritising the inflow and outflow of information you are faced with daily, in such a way, as to realize your dreams and desires.
A process to perfectionIt is important to have the correct mindset about journaling for success or you won’t achieve your goals. You can’t really fail because any attempt you make to journal, will always help reveal what your current thought process is. And in time this will guide you in changing your habits so that you really spend your time on what is needed to achieve your goals. This process of constantly refining what information you are exposed to and what things you are spending your time on, is one of the key instruments in teaching us how to best manage our time. This will eventually cause you to start living a life where you are consistently achieving your dreams. Most of what I have learned about journaling to create personal success came from Dean Graziosi. He is a millionaire who educates other millionaires (especially the youth) on how to achieve the same type of success he did. He ascribes his tremendous wealth and personal success to his lifelong process of constantly improving himself and his goal-setting process through journaling. He was born into a broken middle-class family, his parents were divorced and he even dropped out of high school. He learned early on that he had to improve himself if he ever wanted to rise above his circumstances. Now he is one of the most influential people in real estate, as well as a New York Times bestselling author, being well known for a book called “Millionaire Success Habits”. And, yes, he believes journaling correctly is one of his secret millionaire success habits.Doing this practically:I would encourage anyone reading this to put dedicated time aside each morning to plan and write down what will move you closer towards the success you want to achieve in your life. And then doing the same for a short period at night to see how much you actually did achieve and then start to plan what you will do differently and better tomorrow. I believe that by making this a part of your daily habits, you will discover that, even after a few months, your life will become radically different. My hope for you is that this information propels you into achieving a level of success you could only have dreamed about.A link to the interview between Radio CSA presenter, Jean Jooste, and Dr Francois du Toit: https://youtu.be/2Z2N-hoejMsDr Francois du Toit Registered Naturopath (Doctor of Natural Medicine) and Iridologist Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drfrancoisdutoit Google maps: https://g.page/drdutoit Cell: 060 458 6419For more insight shared from Radio CSA, follow their social media pages:

Discussion on Modern Agriculture

The article was written by Ryno de Swardt, as per the interview done with Radio CSA (https://radiocsa.co.za/).Looking at the term sustainable, the definition states that when something is sustainable it is possible for that to be maintained at a certain rate or level and has the ability to exist constantly. Farming methods as we know it today are not sustainable since it has a destructive and negative impact on our soils, natural ecosystems, food quality and health. Because soils are being degraded, more and more inputs such as synthetic fertilisers are required to produce crops. These synthetic fertilisers have a short term positive impact on plant growth because it consists of all the minerals required for the plant to grow. However, the negative impacts of these fertilisers largely out ways the positive.Major problems related to synthetic fertilisers:
  • Contamination of water bodies
  • Stimulates weed growth
  • Kill beneficial micro-organisms
  • Degrade soil in the long term
Despite the fact that modern agriculture makes use of synthetic fertilisers, soil preparation and cultivation is done in such a way that it facilitates and accelerates the degrading process. It disrupts the soils’ natural structure and also brings weed seeds to the surface. In turn, the farmer has to chemically spray his fields to get rid of the weeds that are competing against his crop for nutrients. Spraying is another common agricultural practice used to fight off plant pests and diseases. The problem with chemical sprays is that it does not only kill pests but also beneficial insects such as butterflies, beetles and bees which play a very important role in pollinating 80% of the world’s plants including 90 different food crops such as apples, pears, peaches, plums, bananas, melons, mangos, berries, onions, nuts (not all nuts), avo’s, beans, coffee, tea, sunflowers, tomatoes, cucumbers and even chocolate require pollination of the cacao bean. So without them, we’ll have a pretty boring, non-diversified diet that lacks nutritional value. Chemical sprays also negatively affect the surrounding fauna and flora.By cultivating our field the way we do, feeding the plants synthetic fertilisers and protecting them with chemical sprays we don’t only end up with degraded soils and natural eco-systems, we also end up with fruit and vegetables that are not nearly as nutrient-rich as they are supposed to be.Unhealthy soils = unhealthy plant. This, in turn, explains why people need medicine and vitamins to boost their immune systems and keep them healthy because the food that we are eating is not doing that job as it should.Masanobu Fukuoka, a Japanese farmer once said: “Food and medicine are not two different things: they are the front and back of one body. Chemically grown vegetables may be eaten for food, but they cannot be used as medicine.”Taking a different pathA growing number of passionate and innovative farmers and scientists are taking a different path, moving toward a farming system that is more sustainable. What is sustainable agriculture? Sustainable agriculture consists of different aspects including economic (to be profitable), social (it should deal fairly with its workers) and environmental (have a mutually beneficial relationship with the surrounding environment). Environmental sustainability in agriculture means good stewardship of the natural systems and resources that farms rely on, this includes building and maintaining healthy soil, managing water wisely, minimizing air, water, and climate pollution and promoting biodiversity.Sustainable not does necessarily mean organicOrganic farmers implement farming methods that are environmentally friendly and promote natural eco-systems, biodiversity and overall good soil and plant health. Current organic standards leave room for some practices that are not optimal from a sustainability point of view and not all farmers who use sustainable farming methods qualify to be organic. Regardless of the difference, it is still better to support these farmers than to support commercial agriculture. How consumers can promote and support sustainable or regenerative farming:
  • Give up convenience – Supporting a sustainable food system is not easy and will require you to put some time, money and effort into your food choices. But ultimately, you’re working toward a greater cause that will ensure you pass on a healthy earth to future generations.
  • Stick to seasonal produce and eat whatever is in season – People like to enjoy year-round fruit and vegetables which is the primary reason that foods are imported from all over the world.
  • Waste less food – Wasting food is bad for the environment. We waste about a third of all food produced for human consumption. This wasted food has taken loads of fresh water, land and labour to produce.
  • Consider the “true cost” of the food – The environmental and social impacts that mass food production creates are often overlooked.
  • If you invest in proper food you’ll invest in your health.
  • Avoid additives or pesticides.
  • Encourage home-cooked meals instead of takeaways and fast food
  • Buy and eat local – Source locally grown food that is produced sustainably, support farmers market and promote the economy within your own community.
  • Get in your garden! – Planting herbs and vegetables for yourself and your family, even if it’s on a very small scale is beneficial for your health and the environment.

Paying off debt when earning R12k per month

Getting some financial input and tools from Brett MacKay from 10x Investments (www.10x.co.za). The purpose of this article is not to provide financial advice but rather educate people on finances where we can.
To be honest, there is no real shortcut to clearing your debts quickly. Debt can be a very useful tool, or it can completely destroy your finances. Managing how to use it properly is not easy. Paying it off is even tougher. There are two simple strategies; earn more or spend less.
When we talk about spending less in order to clear debt we are talking about lowering your expenses to a level where you have leftover funds every month to pay off any debt or credit. The faster you pay off your debts the quicker you can get started with saving/investing and building up your net worth with those funds too.
Here are a couple of tips to help lower expenses and pay off debts quicker:
1. Order fewer deliveries/ takeouts – make more meals at home
2. Review all insurance premiums/cell phone contracts
3. Review your banking fees
4. Shop at cheaper grocers (Woolworths vs Checkers)
5. Use a budget or budgeting app like 22seven
6. Make a list of upcoming expenses to ensure you are financially ready
7. Start a side hustle even if you start small
8. Start an emergency savings account that can be used as a safety net
9. Make use of reward/benefit programs wherever you can
10. Split up your paycheck to pay off the priorities first
I think it is important to understand the effect that taking on debt can have on one’s long term future. Most people do not understand the compounding effect that the interest they have to pay back has over time. My rule is never to pay for something on credit (except a house or vehicle) unless you are able to pay it off in at least a month – easier said than done though.

The Perfect Time To Stay In Touch.

Some great insights from Brad Austen from MiSure (Insurance Brokers – https://misure.co.za/) on the current COVID pandemic and the impact it is having on us socially and financially. A word of encouragement. One of the hardest aspects of this crisis is this social distancing required between you, me, friends, neighbours, colleagues, even our families!I don’t know about you, but the photos of people trying to visit their loved ones through hospital windows just tears at my soul. In difficult times, South Africa’s greatest strength has come from pulling together – working shoulder to shoulder – to generate the ingenuity, resilience and tenacity that solves problems and creates opportunities. We’ll overcome this crisis, too, I have no doubt. From six feet apart, if necessary. But we have to stay connected…even as we socially isolate. That’s why you’ll be hearing regularly from me and my team while this volatility lasts–by phone, email, online meetings, more phone calls… it’s critical we stay in touch. And you’ll find some valuable resources on both your health and the markets at http://www.misure.co.za and correspondence especially pertaining to Vitality. One thing I want you to remember as you watch the (financial) markets and the news: You have the strength and the intestinal fortitude to survive this market storm. Because this is a market storm…a temporary event you and I have long prepared for by making smart, responsible decisions about allocating assets and diversifying holdings. We based your (our clients) portfolio on Nobel prize-winning investment strategies that have protected investors for the last 60+ years, and they are protecting you now. Given the strength of the economy before the health crisis, some experts believe a recovery could be fairly fast and strong. No one knows, of course, and I am monitoring the markets and (client) investments with extreme diligence to keep us well-positioned for positive days ahead.Because prosperous days will come again. They always do. This time is no different. Let me leave you with a story that illustrates how I view market downturns. You may have heard this before, but it perfectly explains my mission in managing (client) portfolios:“Years ago a farmer, whose fields stretched along the eastern seaboard, was looking for hired hands. It wasn’t easy to find help. People were reluctant to work on the Atlantic coast. They dreaded the regular raging storms that wreaked havoc on buildings and crops. Interviewing applicants for the job, the farmer received a steady stream of refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached him. “Are you a good farmhand?” the farmer asked. “Well, I can sleep when the wind blows,” answered the little man. Although puzzled by this answer, the desperate farmer hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, keeping himself busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer was satisfied with his new hire. Then, late one night, the Atlantic wind began howling in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand’s sleeping quarters. He shook the little man, yelling, “Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!” The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, “No, sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows.” Enraged, the farmer was tempted to fire the old man on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens in their coops, the doors barred, the shutters tightly secured. Everything was tied down; nothing would blow away. The farmer returned to his bed, and the sound of the storm wind lulled him to sleep.”I like to think that I’m the hired hand who keeps you safe while the wind blows. I hope you think so, too, and if there is anything more I can do to “lull you to sleep,” please let me know. P.S. This is the perfect time to connect with an old friend! P.P.S.

George Municipality update on storm related incidences

George Municipality officials had their hands full especially on Monday after windy and ice-cold conditions hit the coast on Sunday night (12 July 2020). The George Emergency Call Centre was inundated with hundreds of calls from Sunday evening until Tuesday at 8 am. Our electrotechnical teams attended to 110 high voltage complaints in Wilderness, Hoekwil, Thembalethu and the George greater area where power outages were experienced. A total of  65 low voltage complaints where streets and houses were affected were attended to on Monday with repair work continuing until late into the evening. The teams also dealt with a few power dips on Tuesday due to the bad weather.

The George Fire Brigade assisted the Human Settlements Directorate on Monday night in handing out 60 sandbags to eight households in Blanco. These homes had lost their roofs during the windy conditions.  A total so far of 23 families have been assisted in George, Haarlem and Touwsranten with roofs that were damaged by strong winds and bad weather. The directorate provided gunplast to 60 formal and informal houses and supplied roof sheets for 1 house.

George Fire Brigade together with our Parks section dealt with at least 27 trees on Monday which had either fallen over or branches that had broken off and had to be removed,  following the high winds At least three trees fell onto parked cars and fortunately, no injuries were reported. In several cases, the fallen trees or branches had blocked roads or sidewalks and these needed priority clearing.  Emergency Services also attended to a portion of the Rosemoor Stadium wall in Miller Street that blew over on Monday. Repairs will be done as soon as is possible.

Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha thanked officials for their hard work in extreme weather conditions. “The wind, cold and rain coupled with load shedding, have made things very difficult for all of our officials working to restore power and clearing roads and sidewalks. Our civils department also faced challenges with a large water main pipe burst on the N2 during the same timeframe.  We thank everyone for their hard work in restoring power and water to our communities and also thank the public for their patience and understanding.”
