Illegal Dumping awareness session

Following an Illegal Dumping Awareness session that was held at Thembalethu Community Hall last Saturday 31 October, it was clear that illegal dumping is a big problem and health hazard in George and without the help of the local communities the Municipalities will not be able to keep up with the cleaning of dumps, as it is not financially viable. The Executive Mayor of George, Alderman Leon van Wyk, said in his address to the stakeholders present, “we can only win this war on waste when we have plans in place to sustain our efforts in addressing illegal dumping.
Cllr Khayalethu Lose (GRDM), Aldm Memory Booysen (Mayor of GRDM) and Aldm Leon van Wyk (Mayor of George) watching the presentation at the event.
Van Wyk said it became evident during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic that illegal dumping in areas such as Thembalethu and Pacaltsdorp was becoming a serious health concern. “We were advised to take action and source funding to undertake the cleaning up of sites. From a George Municipality perspective we appreciate any kind of assistance from government institutions as well as the private sector is highly welcomed and appreciated.” Van Wyk said it is indeed wonderful that the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) and the George Municipality are working together to clean dumping sites. He said we need to take pride in our homes, properties and areas in which we live. There are many dangers and negative effects that arise from dumping. It becomes a health risk to humans and animals.
Members from the Sikhulasonke project is a non-profit organisation based in Thembalethu community. The organisation assists the community by beautifying some of the dumping sites, as they would like communities to look clean, safe and green. They are currently busy on site in Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
The Municipality assisted the members with working materials to clean the sites and beautify it. In front from left are Nokuthula Gumana, Khanyisa Angel Dukumbana, Sivuyile Adams and Ethan Stoffels (George Mun). At the back are Cllr Khayalethu Lose, Aldm Memory Booysen, Lunga Pieters, Wonga Luke, Tanja Botha (George Mun), Grace Notshokovu, (George Mun) Karin Stoffels (George Mun) and Aldm Leon van Wyk.
Van Wyk said these problems also need to be addressed at national government level in terms of advertising and education. He said municipalities will never have enough funding at any stage to end illegal dumping. “We need to work together to eliminate dumping. The City of Cape Town spends hundreds of millions of rand on addressing illegal dumping. George Municipality struggles  to allocate R10 million every financial year. If we didn’t have to spend this money on clearing dumping, it could be spent on other important services such as, playground equipment, sport and assistance to small and micro businesses.
Stakeholders at the event are in front from left, Cllr Jenny Hartnick (GRDM), Grace Notshokovu (George Municipality), Cllr Khayalethu Lose. At the back are Ethan Stoffels (George Mun), Bonisile Desha (Programme Director), Cllr Joslyn Johnson (GRDM), Cllr Iona Kritzinger (George Mun), Aldm Memory Booysen (GRDM), Aldm Leon van Wyk (George Mun), Cllr Erica Brown ( George Mun), Tanja Botha (George Mun), Karin Stoffels (George Mun) and Radie Loubser (George Mun).
Alderman Memory Booysen, Executive Mayor of the GRDM, said in his address that we will show the rest of South Africa, starting in George, that we can be the safest, cleanest district in the country. Booysen said the project will be rolled out to the rest of the district and he, the Mayor of Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) pledges his continuous support to this operation.Radie Loubser, Senior Manager: Environmental Services at George Municipality said he is an advocate to get the communities involved together with the buy-in of councillors. He said people should be made aware of the problem through the help of councillors. Dumping is illegal and a big health hazard.Loubser said people should be informed and educated on the problem and how to address it and law enforcement should enforce punishment with the issuing of fines.A presentation was made by Johan Gie, Waste Management at GRDM where the challenges, requirements and costs of the project were explained. A video clip where locals were interviewed, was part of the presentation shown. The video clip showed community members who have started cleaning their own neighbourhoods. It was also clear that many residents are unhappy with the current state their communities are in and they are ready to blow the whistle on illegal dumpers.REPORT ILLEGAL DUMPING What is illegal dumping? Equipping yourself for your Career

“There is no passion to be found in playing small — in settling for a life that is less than you are capable of living.” — Nelson MandelaAs a University graduate myself and an “I-need-to-figure-out-my-life”-survivor, I know how tough it can get to make decisions about your Career. And even more, you need to make it in Grade 9 already when you choose your subjects, making it even more intense. That’s why Mastering It (www.masteringit.co.za) and KipMcGrath George (www.kipmcgrath.co.za) thought it well to make FREE Career Q&A Sessions available to students. This happened 13 & 15 October and we were able to help 5 students with their Career uncertainties and queries. We had a discussion on the following topics:
  • Self-Assessment – you need to know your Hobbies, Personality, Values and Skills in order to make an informed decision about your Career.
  • Environmental Assessment – there is a lot of opportunities out there and different industries to choose from for a Career.
  • Goal Setting – Be SMART about it! 😉
  • Action Plan – How are you planning on reaching your goals? Make it practical.

It was a great time for students to think and reflect about a few quite important things impacting their Career.

Like the quote above states – we have more potential than we realise and many times it takes great risks in order to pursue the unlocking of that potential. But I want to encourage you to not be afraid of these big steps into the adulthood life. Our lives are filled with various of decisions to be made on a daily basis and the career decisions, okay and the choosing of your spouse, are for sure of the biggest decisions you will ever make. Get guidance and assistance with these decisions. Attend workshops. Get to know yourself a bit better. We will definitely be having more FREE Career workshops in the future. Take some Courage for the rest of the year!

WOW!! The craziest year in history is almost done and dusted.  Time flies when you are having fun!

Here is something from Brian Tracy that is very appropriate at this time:

A Special Kind of Courage

There are several different aspects of courage. Perhaps the most important is the courage to endure, to persist, to “hang in there” in the face of doubt, uncertainty and criticism from others.Practice Patience in Adversity This is called “courageous patience,” the willingness and the ability to “stay the course” in the face of uncertainty, doubt and often criticism from many quarters.Stay the Course In my experience, there is a critical time period between the launching of a new venture and the results that come from that venture. During this hiatus, this waiting period, many people lose their nerve. They cannot stand the suspense of not knowing, of possible failure. They break and run in battle, they quake and quit in business. The True Leader But the true leader is the person who can stand firm, who refuses to consider the possibility of failure. The turning points of many key moments in human history have been the resolution, or lack thereof, of one person. Courageous patience is the acid test of leadership. To encourage others, to instil confidence in them, to help them to perform at their best requires first of all that you lead by example.

Allow Honest Mistakes The second thing you can do to help alleviate the fears of failure and rejection in others is to encourage them to take calculated risks and allow honest mistakes.Build People Up Give the people who look up to you regular praise and approval. Celebrate good tries as well as success, large and small. Create a psychological climate where people feel safe from censure, blame or criticism of any kind. Then do things that make people feel terrific about themselves.Become Unstoppable Courage comes from acting courageously on a day-to-day basis. Your personal development goal should be to practice the behaviours of a totally fearless person until you become, in your own mind, unstoppable.Action Exercises Here are two ways for you to develop courageous patience.First, prepare yourself in advance for the inevitable disappointments and setbacks you will experience on the way to your goal. Don’t be surprised when they occur.Second, resolve in advance that you will bounce rather than break and continually encourage others to think and act the same way.

Paul J Meyer of Success Motivation Institute said: “never give mental recognition to the possibility of defeat”.

That means that you need to form a clear mental picture in your mind of what you want.  Focus on it continually as though it is already in place.

Use affirmations to develop the ideal mindset to help you achieve the things you want.  Here is an awesome affirmation from Bob Proctor: “I am so happy and grateful now that money comes to me in increasing quantities through multiple sources on a continual basis”.

To me, the key here is “multiple sources”.  The best way to develop multiple sources of income is to build a Network Marketing business.  NO, not a pyramid scheme!  Network Marketing is a legitimate and legal way of doing business that is taught at Harvard University.

One of the great NWM companies is Mannatech who manufacture the finest nutritional products available.  Mannatech is traded on the New York Stock Exchange, they have been around for over 25 years and more than 140 patents have been issued to them.  They are in more than 25 countries worldwide and that is growing.

My Daughter is in this business and if you would like to know more, please contact me.

Have an awesome November!

Home School Teaching Success: Habits of the Mind Series Part 1

How do you define success? What do you want your children to know, be able to do and value?
Imagine being able to go to the people who you see as the most successful and ask them, “HOW!?”
Well, there was a group of academics who undertook such a task and they saw that there are certain habits that people who are successful have. But before we launch into this and become instantly successful in teaching and learning…

What’s a habit and why is this important?

Well, a habit is something that your mind/body defaults to when you don’t even think about what to do. It’s the way your brain ticks. When someone sneezes do you say, “Bless you.” Probably not in 2020. Now you just pull your mask a little closer and walk a little faster. The Habits of the Mind are what we want our children to have as their go-to.
One of the most valuable gifts we can give our children is helping them know how to solve a problem.
In this series we’ll be looking at all 16 of the Habits of the Mind that will aid your teaching. We won’t just discuss them, but I’ll give you practical ways of using them in your lessons.Like how we use ‘Responding with Wonderment and Awe’ in the homeCode Space Explorers Coding Course for Kids.
Knowing about a habit and actually getting into a habit are two vastly different things.
If you’re curious about how you might apply these habits into your teaching and routines, then please let me know what sort of topics you’re covering (for any age) and I can help with some ideas. Let’s chat on FacebookTwitter or Instagram.Until then, keep thinking and keep exploring!

George Martial Arts, Combat Sport and Self Defence

Whether you are looking to start training for fun, fitness or competition George has a good selection of local clubs and instructors. Below is a list of clubs I have been in contact with. I can recommend any of them for quality instruction. Each club and instructor comes with much experience and good recommendations. Most instructors on this list have trained across many arts but each have chosen to settle with certain arts they prefer to teach. This list is not an exhaustive list of the clubs and instructors in George but this list will get you well on your way to find what you are looking for.

KARATE

The “Empty Hand”. Karate is great for building discipline and structure. Saying “empty hand” means just that, nothing is needed but your Karate teachings and bare hands for combat and self defence. Karate was developed as a means of self defence against armed and unarmed attackers. Karate works on a basis of perfecting each technique. This is done through focus, practice and discipline. The concept is that each punch, kick or block is done to the extent that it will be the final blow. Karate has a weapons offering named Kobudo. Karate is to the point with now extravagant movements. Sensei Mareon Ferndale will educate you on the details of Karate.

I went to Egypt to train with the Egyptians to sharpen up my Kumite skills and learn a lot how to implement techniques on the floor to lift up our South African Standard.”Contact: 0833411663Email: mareonwp@gmail.comFacebook: https://web.facebook.com/groups/717779685248724

KRAV MAGA

Krav Maga was developed by the Isreal Defence Force as their military self defence and fighting system. The techniques are derived from a multitude of traditional arts. This system kept only the techniques that could be applied to life and death situations. Krav Maga practices real world situations, armed and unarmed. Due to its military background there will be exposure to firearm defense and knowledge. This art is very effective in self defence on the street. Instructor Joe Geldenhuys offers Krav Maga as his primary art but also has classes in Kickboxing and MMA on request.

KICKBOXING – JIU JITSU– MMA

Kickboxing is one of the oldest arts out there as every one has the ability to punch and kick to some extent. This was defined when boxing was combined with the art of kicking. Kickboxing is done competitively, for self defence or general fitness. There are a few different methods of using kickboxing detailed by Shihan Sors Grobbelaar below.Jiu Jitsu is a self defence system based on grappling. Originating in Japan and adopted by the brazilians. Jiu Jitsu gained international fame and recognition as one of the most effective grappling arts. In Jiu Jitsu physical size doesn’t matter but rather the experience level of the practitioner.Mixed Martial Arts better known as MMA. This is exactly what it sounds like, a combination of different arts. MMA is the current leader as a combat sport when it comes to mastery of skill. Practitioners of MMA need to train and understand the complexity of standing and ground combat across all martial arts and combat systems. It is great fun to practice and holds many fitness and skill challenges.

TAEKWONDO – YONGMUDO

TaeKwondo is a korean martial arts form that specialises in kicking combined with optimal movement. The majority of the kicks are aimed at the head with lower kicks as set up strategies in the competitive setting. It’s a brilliant game of skill with any kick having the potential to stop your opponent at any time. These kicks are like a loaded gun, it only takes one to incapacitate your opponent. Then the secret weapon, the punch. Although underutilised in mainstream competition TaeKwondo punches are very effective and are applied with the same strategy as the kicking. TaeKwondo is great for fitness, flexibility and self defence. Yongmudo is a modern hybrid form of Korean self defence art based on a combination of styles. Similar to MMA this takes great skill and dedication. You need to learn groundwork and standing combat. But Sabum Quinton Harman will elaborate on this when you contact him.

NINJUTSU

Ninjutsu was originally used for warfare and espionage by Japanese clans during the feudal era in Japan. The “Ninja” mostly consisted of spies that helped feudal lords gain favour by way of information trafficking. Due to this dangerous environment the “Ninja” developed a self defence and combat system catering to their needs. The “Ninja” needed to study the people, area, weapons and martial arts of the different clans they were assigned to infiltrate as part of their survival strategy. So be prepared for a written exam as part of level grading. From there Ninjutsu developed different areas of practice to cover this wide spectrum. Forget about the Hollywood sword and flying star image. Ninjutsu is ruthless, it works on deception and completing the mission at any cost.

Kaihou Shin Defence Art

Sensei: Benjamin W FourieOffering: Ninjutsu – Kenjutsu (Japanese Swordsmanship) – Self Defence – MMABio: “I have trained in many arts in the span of my martial arts journey. My first exposure at a young age was Taekwondo. From there I have trained in Karate, Kung Fu, Wrestling, Boxing and Kickboxing. I then found Ninjutsu. Ninjutsu had the most extensive offering. This also included weapons and military training. I practiced this for 7 years before moving onto Judo, wrestling and grappling.”“I offer self defence classes ranging from individual to group training. Some of the more advanced self defence classes might seem a bit ruthless in nature but that is due to the reality of violent attack”  “My extensive martial arts background and unique training is complimented with my study of psychology. This placed me in a favourable position to help as an advisor for preparing competitive athletes for tournaments across many arts.”“I hold a 1st Kyu grading in Ninjutsu (dojo, weapons and bush craft) – 1 Degree black belt in Kaihou Shin Defence Art (grade by Eastern Cape Budo Association) – Blue belt in Judo, part time Judo instructor and in 2015 I was the Chairman for Buffalo City Metro Judo Association affiliated to the International Judo Federation.”Contact: 084 444 5480Email: bwfourie@gmail.comFacebook: https://web.facebook.com/Self-Defence-Instructor-743595428999947/
