Decoding tyre sidewall information

Decoding the information on tyre sidewalls is getting tougher and tougher for the layman. And no wonder, as the number of different specifications, is steadily increasing, which means tyre manufacturers have to add more indicators to the sidewall.

These sequences of numbers, letters and in some cases symbols can help motorists identify the right tyre for their vehicle – an important consideration in order to achieve the best balance of tyre performance for acceleration, braking and cornering, as well as ride comfort, noise and rolling resistance.

Here’s an example of a sequence you may find on the sidewall of a Continental tyre, and how to decode it. In the case of “225/45 R 18 95 H SSR MOE”, the number “225” represents the width of the tyre in millimetresso in this case, the tyre is 225 mm wide. The “45” that follows is the aspect ratio – the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of its width, which equates to 101 mm for this tyre.

Next up is an “R”, which is short for “radial”. Today, radial tyres have almost completely replaced the cross-ply tyres that were the standard design until the 1980s. The figure “18” indicates the wheel rim diameter in inches, while “95” is the load index, indicating the maximum weight the tyre can bear. In this example, the tyre is rated for 650 kg.

Then comes the letter “H” which is the speed index, where “H” signals a maximum speed of 210 km/h. “SSR” indicates that this is a Continental “SelfSupportingRunflat” tyre, otherwise identified by “RF” or “Runflat”.

High-performance tyres often include “XL” after the size marking or the word “Reinforced” on the sidewall. This refers to tyres with additional sidewall reinforcements, which are designed to cope with the additional forces created by high-speed driving, cornering and braking.

In the case of 4×4 tyres, “M+S” is short for “mud and snow”, referring to tyres that are suited to operating in adverse conditions.

One important item for drivers is the production date, indicated by what’s called the DOT code. It’s made up of the letters DOT and two pairs of figures, separated by a forward slash. The first two numbers show the week the tyre was built; the last two indicate the year. So “36/16” means the tyre was built in the 36th calendar week (i.e. between September 5 and 11) in 2016.

This is important in order to determine the age of the tyre, as the rubber degrades over time. Tyres older than five years should be avoided in the interests of safety and reliable performance, and this can be further influenced by the manner and environment in which tyres are stored.

We need different friends

Social interaction forms the root of our community. Think about it for a second: how many people do you need to talk to during the day. Some of the interactions are compulsory. You might not necessarily like the person or you might even dread speaking with them, but you must. Then there are the select few that you look forward to speaking with. It might be a person you like or some store clerk that always makes you laugh at their silly comments. It all forms part of how we communicate. In spite of all the many different people we talk with, only a select few become our friends. We have friends for many reasons. Some reasons may include aspects like stress management, emotional support or shared interests. No matter the reason it remains important to have friends to share your life experience with. Intimate friends aren’t the only friends you have. An acquaintance can also fulfil this role on some level. This could be a gym partner or the person you meet in the coffee shop queue. You aren’t intimate friends but yet you look forward to the interaction. Either way you are socially stimulated. This makes you feel good and helps you maintain balance in your life. Friendship helps us grow, form new habits and build confidence. What no one tells you is that your friends will change as you develop and grow. Some of my childhood friends I don’t even have contact with anymore and yet I thought that we would stay friends forever. Why does this happen to us? As we grow older our priorities change in line with the lifestyle we chose. We then develop in a distinctly different direction. During this development we form a new image of what we would like to become and who we see ourselves becoming in future. Our friends go through similar development. If you and your friends go through similar development in the same field or direction then the likelihood of you remaining friends are strong. With the opposite being true if you develop in different directions. Then there are certain levels of development that also influence your friendship. At some point during the mental development a person becomes satisfied with what they have achieved and could aim to maintain the level of satisfaction they have reached. An average example being a person with a stable income, white picket fence and a lovely family life. This person practices a hobby and doesn’t want to learn anything outside of their comfort zone. Their friend on the other hand might have developed in the same way but still feels the urge to achieve more and learn what lies beyond their idea of a “normal” life. Where this friendship would normally be great, the one starts becoming a threat to the others stability and the friends then drift apart. Even after drifting apart the friends still miss each other because of the social stimulation they got from that friend. They then end up looking for new friends only to replace them with someone similar that they don’t really know that well. Here is where friends need to work on their friendship, is stead of just giving up or throwing in the towel. Just a bit of communication could clear things up easily. In this case the friends need to stop being ‘pig headed’ and give each other a chance. If only they talked… The final aspect is mental maturity vs knowledge. Despite your best attempts at being a recluse, you will need to have quite a few friends. If you do not get social stimulation on your vast scape of knowledge and level off mental maturity then you become depressed. This can have a negative impact on your health and lifestyle. The little social relationships you have can start falling apart. You could develop a false sense of being “better than the rest.” There is no such thing, trust me on this. Every person on this planet has something to offer, they might not all be intellectual geniuses but each contributes on their own level.   If you have any trouble along these lines I urge you to consult a psychologist. Seeing a “mind doctor” should be common practice in the times we live in. That is a fact. Look out for your friends and your friends will look out for you.If you need to talk to someone confidentially and don’t want to go to a psychologist just remember that my door I open, just reach out to me. I might not always look the part but I know a thing or two on the less travelled road. I have been on it most of my life…

The LEGO Creator Expert Ford Mustang was developed in a partnership between Ford and LEGO® Group and is being celebrated on International Lego Day (28 January). The Creator Expert: Ford Mustang model is based on a 1967 Fastback and is available to purchase in South Africa.

Made up of 1,470 pieces, the nostalgic muscle car comes complete with working steering, dark-blue bodywork, white racing stripes, bonnet scoop, printed Mustang grille badge, GT emblems, and five-spoke rims with road-gripping tyres. Measuring over 10 centimetres high, 34 centimetres long and 14 centimetres wide, the set gives budding builders the chance to customise their all-American icon to their own specification thanks to a collection of optional add-ons – while retaining its instantly recognisable symbol of the Mustang pony logo.

Customisation options include a supercharger, rear ducktail spoiler, beefy exhaust pipes, front chin spoiler and a nitrous oxide tank for an authentic muscle car build experience. “The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic muscle cars of the past six decades, and to have its combination of design and heritage replicated by this set is exciting for fans of both Ford and LEGO,” says Doreen Mashinini, General Manager Marketing at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA).

The authentic replica model also allows owners to store items in the trunk or lift the hood to reveal a detailed big block 6.4-litre V8 engine with battery, hoses and air filter detailing. The rear axle of the car can be lifted for an extra-mean look, the doors can be opened and the roof panel removed to give access to the detailed interior with classic seats, radio, working steering and a mid-console gearshift. A printed mustang grille badge, GT emblems and a selection of license plates add the final touches to this extraordinary LEGO Creator Expert model.

While the 1967 Fastback is a great choice for LEGO fans the latest Ford Mustang offerings are sure to get your heart racing. In South Africa the Ford Mustang is available in fastback and convertible body styles, with a choice of a 331kW 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, or the 213kW 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine – all using Ford’s advanced 10-speed automatic transmission.

All-New Isuzu D-Max crowned 2021 Pick-Up Of The Year by 4×4 Magazine

The All-New Isuzu D-Max, highly anticipated in the local market, has won its very first UK award after eclipsing all the competition at the 4×4 Magazine awards.

After a conducting a comprehensive driving appraisal, testing the safety equipment and comparing its specification with the competitors, the esteemed panel were convinced that there was only one worthy winner and bestowed the coveted title upon the All-New Isuzu D-Max. The judges were particularly impressed by the new model’s comfortable interior, refined driving characteristics, sleek dashboard design and new infotainment systems, which includes a 9-inch touchscreen display on the top-of-the-range model.

Alan Kidd, Editor at 4×4 Magazine, commented: “This D-Max is far more refined to drive on the road. It’s smoother and quieter at all speeds, with steering and suspension that disguise its size. Its cabin is a quantum leap forward with cutting-edge electronics mounted on a superb looking dash”.

As the UK’s only 4×4 and Pick-Up Magazine, their dedicated readership of off-road enthusiasts will also be interested in the D-Max’s even stronger chassis, faster engaging shift-on-the-fly 4WD system and the rear diff-lock, which is now standard on All-Purpose and Adventure range models.

The increased refinement, safety and comfort of the All-New Isuzu D-Max hasn’t compromised Isuzu’s renowned practicality, with the new model offering a 3.5t towing capacity and a maximum payload of over one tonne.

The new Isuzu D-Max is expected to launch in South Africa in 2022.

The Homeless of George

January the nineteenth saw the first online Town Hall meeting on the Georgiete Staan Saam Facebook group. Herman Pienaar who is the co-owner of the the Facebook group, said that he will be running regular online meetings to discuss issues that is of importance for George and its communities.
Herman Pienaar, CEO of LoveGeorge and admin of Georgiete Staan Saam.
“We are living in a new world, everything as we know it is changing because of the pandemic. This includes the ability to have meetings to discuss important issues. The purpose of our regular engagements is to promote social cohesion and unity in George. The first step in achieving social cohesion is to understand each other and to achieve that . We need to start talking and connecting to each other. The idea with these Group engagements is to allow for positive conversations around topics in George, which needs to be addressed.”Pienaar said that George has always had homeless people. He has been in George for 20 years and it has always been a problem. Everybody knew and know homeless people that just need a helping hand to assist them to get off the street. We all know that there are also vagrants that is also sleeping on the streets, which is also an issue that needs to be addressed. He believes that we have to start implementing projects and it does not matter how small the project is, we need to start.“We also have to look at 2030 and ask how will the Homeless issue look by 2030. With this in mind, the projects and solutions that we will collectively come up with will have to be sustainable. So kom ons gesels met mekaar vanaand op ‘n volwasse manier en kom ons soek oplossings. Ek verstaan daar is ‘n frustrasie rondom die homeless en die enigste manier is ongelukkig om dit op die tafel te sit sodat almal kan weet wat die probleme is en so oplossings daarvoor te kan kry.”Salette Cloete reported about the first meeting in the George Herald. Her article can be found at the following link. https://www.georgeherald.com/News/Article/General/online-discussionsHere are comments made by members of the group: Here is the link to the Facebook discussion
Thank you for the topic and chance to share. Homeless persons are a diverse group and many of them can be assisted away from the street. To make this happen we need co-operation and a plan to give the right help. Anyone with positive ideas would make a good contribution.
Andre Olivier I think there are enough people who wants to make a positive contribution. We need cooperation from the powerhouse in the city. The process to establish a place for the homeless drags now for more then 10years.
Respect and discipline starts with every individual You cannot fight for a person’s “human rights” if the person is not willing to comply with the basic rules of respect and discipline
20 hectar ground with water is needed to
1. Recover the person from whatever state of mind they are in
2.Restore the person to their family
3.Reintegrate through skills development certified into various industries In order to do this infrastructure is needed which can be provided by the community The Municipality have too much on their plate to service something like this but if we can get R10 from every citizen per month The community then runs this facility and not the Government There are people in George who has this calling and for all the negatives accountants and lawyers forms part of the process to ensure accountability.
Probeer hul verenig met familie. Gee n hand…. nie n rand. As jy wil geld skenk, skenk aan geregistreerde instansies wat uitreik na haweloses.
We need to give the person his/her dignity back. The issue of skills development / transfer is of the utmost importance. We should remember we can teach people to fish, but they need a dam to fish in. We need to look further than just the obvious and we need to look at creating the “dam” or opportunities.
Perhaps a good starting point is to speak to homeless people ask them what they need to permanently get off the street. Now not referring to people addicted to drugs, etc, obviously they need rehab.
Is the idea just to get the homeless off the street because they are an embarrassment to us (sorry for the bluntness) or do we have programs to help them reintegrate back into society and reunite with their families?
We see an everyday increase in needy and homeless people on the streets of George. There is only one night shelter and it’s charging R25,00 per night. The organization, Cremhog, has been awarded land by the George Council for the purpose of dealing with homeless people. The land is close to the station and, although the approval was done by Council, there’s some politicking to this. Cremhog, driven by Andre Olivier and his team, are currently in a stalemate with the Municipality. This is due to the fact that some individuals in power are now deviating from the terms and conditions. I have that info and communication readily available. So, there is an organization with a proper plan, but some people are frustrating or delaying the process. This is due to some hidden agenda, in which case I do not want to divulge here. Fact is that those petty things are robbing people of decent opportunities. But some guys think they are larger than life and misuse their positions. We could have been long passed the situation of homeless in the city had they implemented the Council decision as resolved.
Virgill Gericke that is why this should not be left up to politicians and government but rather the community to stand together I am prepared to give my R10 per month if you are and everybody commenting and that are members of Georgiete staan saam then we have R700 000 per month to address the issue without interference from government or Municipality and we did not ask a cent nor did we require their permission.
Pieter Niemanf ill give R100 per month and I believe many will to help these people
Charles Pieter van Niekerk I am sure there are people that would contribute more than R10 I just use R10 as an example however this brings us into the TRUST issue Just like so many others we have all been trying to eradicate this through various Registered entities Endless red tape but no performance from those who want to govern I produced business plans with a Success record of 67% over 25 years of which 10 years in George We have presented to the minister of Social development the mayors both Eden, and now……….we starting again Let’s do it !
It is also advisable to stop approaching the problem in many different silo’s. We need to get approach the situation in a uniform manner. We must have the same goals and perceived outcomes. Only a coordinated effort will have any impact.

Work Uniforms: Dress Better Than The Rest

Whether you spend your days knocking door to door selling insurance policies or cosmetics, or wiggle under cars changing drippy oils and fluids, looking your best with a hot to trot work uniform is a career must.If you work with any type of liquid material like paint or grease, or natural foundation like cement or dirt, purchasing two or three sets of coveralls for work uniforms would be the best protection for your underclothes. This is especially true if you are a hard-working man and are sick and tired of washing your soiled shirts and pants and trying every technique to eliminate those stubborn stains! For the white-collared professional, looking neat and well kept is a career necessity. Whether you sell, buy, trade or distribute, the appearance of your work uniform is a reflection of your business philosophy. Keep it simple by purchasing solid colour plain or pleated dress pants or slacks work uniforms, then make sure they are regularly laundered and pressed. When choosing tops for work uniforms, a smart pick would be a long-sleeved button down light-coloured collared shirt. A solid coloured blouse or dress shirt would be appropriate or possibly one with thin, light-coloured pin stripes.Sometimes, the steamy hot sun rears its ugly head and short sleeves are a must for work uniforms. In that case, be sure to choose a cotton or polyester button-down with a neutral colour. Fortunately, women can opt for a professional-looking knee or ankle-length skirt to wear to work on those warmer days. For men, a nice addition to your button-down work uniform shirt would be a necktie. If you aren’t adept at typing one, there are plenty of great clip-on styles available. At first glance, it’s difficult to distinguish between the two styles, so it probably doesn’t matter which you choose! For women, a neckerchief or scarf neatly secured under the collar with a bow showing in the front would be a classy move for a work uniform. If your company has a theme logo, try to coordinate colours with your choice of accessory. For a professional look, keep any accessories simple and small. Top off the work look by keeping your hair pinned away from the face and secured in a braid or low-hanging pony tail. If your work environment is more casual, you still must maintain a professional appearing work uniform. Choices for a work uniform could include a polo shirt with your name hand-stitched on the chest or, for a fun look, a Hawaiian-style or colourfully printed button-down shirt that is not faded and looks crisp and fresh.

Getting on board with Adoption

Adoption has been growing in becoming more known and a more familiar practice amongst people. You see more families within your personal network that has an adopted child or children. And for different reasons adoption takes place.Perhaps there has also been a few stigmas around adoption. Like particular cost and administration arrangements involved. The best we can do in order to address these stigmas, is to educate ourselves on the topic of adoption. Get together with families that has adopted a child already. Be open to ask the questions that you have. Be interested in the process and get involved in the conversation. Nothing better than a personal testimony on how to change a life! Also perhaps take the time to do your own research on this. Is there any adoption facilities in your surrounding area? Visit adoption sites and talk with the professionals involved. In addition, here is also a great podcast on adoption: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1lIRWM1J8UefBenhYFlLoz?si=tuYHCb64TeKdaoy6ELZ8XwIn this episode, Scotty shares a little bit about their journey in orphan care, through the journey of adopting their beautiful little girl, Sadie. Scotty addresses some of the most asked questions around what it is like to adopt cross-culturally in South Africa. We hope you are encouraged through his testimony and insight.

James 1:27 “True spirituality that is pure in the eyes of our Father God is to make a difference in the lives of the orphans, and widows in their troubles, and to refuse to be corrupted by the world’s values.
