Weevils released as part of multi-faceted Kariba Weed management plan.

The George Municipality is taking the Kariba Weed infestation at the Garden Route dam very seriously. Here is their latest press release regarding the problem.George Municipality is seeing excellent results following the release of 1500 weevils as part of a multi-faceted plan to sustainably manage Kariba Weed infestation in the Garden Route Dam.“The municipality is fully aware of the presence of Kariba Weed in the dam, as well as the causes for it, and is working alongside experts in the field to manage the problem holistically,” said George Municipality Superintendent Parks and Recreation Priscilla Burgoyne.Weevils of the species Cyrtobagous salviniae were released mid-February 2021 at the Kat River inlet into the dam and near the dam wall where most of the Kariba Weed grows. Upon follow-up investigation, studies confirmed a 91% infection uptake and a significant reduction in the amount of dead plant material is expected once the weevils have established. The weevils reproduce constantly and is expected to stay and reproduce as long as it has Kariba Weed to feed on. The larvae do the most damage as they bore into the stem of the plant and disrupt the vascular system, hollowing it out. The adults eat away at the growing tip which stops growth.“We are grateful to be working with specialists in the Aquatic Weeds Programme at the Rhodes University Centre for Biological Control, which is currently undertaking studies in the Garden Route Dam. During a visit to the infection sites, the unit indicated that the infestation was not currently a concern as the surface coverage was proportionally small compared to overall size of the dam and could be effectively addressed with a few interventions.“The Parks and Recreation section is developing a management plan with the assistance of aquatic specialist Dr Jackie Dabrowski and will comprise biological control, manual removal and spraying when necessary. We hope to combine funding with other relevant municipal departments to implement practical sustainable solutions that will address the issue as long as it is necessary.“The municipality assures the public that this matter is well in hand, is being addressed by learned experts in their fields, and that there is no current threat of oxygen depletion or eutrophication as has been suggested by non-expert members of the public citing ‘Wikipedia’ as their source of reference,” said Ms Burgoyne. The municipality has already reported on the upgrades of the Eden Pump Station, situated in the Kat River above the main Kariba Weed site, in the 2020-2021 financial year. This project was prioritised because of its proximity to the Garden Route Dam, although sewage is in any case always chemically treated to neutralise the impact of possible spillage. When a spillage occurs anywhere, it is cleaned and chemically treated as soon as possible. The George Municipality has a scheduled water sampling programme and results are submitted to the Department: Water and Sanitation, who are the custodians of all water sources and courses, as is required in terms of legislation.Contamination in the Kat River is also attributed to its proximity to built-up areas and it is inevitable that debris, garden and household effluent and other pollution from human habitation are flushed into the water course.

Preventative maintenance is the best maintenance.

Whether you own a classic car, boat, truck or even new car, petrol or diesel, you need to know about Fuel Doctor. But before we give you the technical detail, if you think this is just another promotional article about a product we encourage you to Google Fuel Doctors and see the myriad of testimonials and endorsements from individuals and businesses alike. From 30-year old Landy’s with 600k on the clock to yacht owners and even the Brisbane Bus Service. This product has continuously worked the clean fuel systems and increase the longevity of engines.

So what exactly is it? Fuel doctor is a Fuel System Cleaner, Conditioner, and Stabiliser. Established in 1994, the initial focus was the cleaning of underground fuel tanks for emergency power generators in the high-rise buildings of Brisbane’s central business district. The next phase of the business included the de-sludging and cleaning of underground tanks in service stations, truck stops and marinas. It’s from these heavy-duty contracts that Fuel Doctor was developed.

Fuel Doctor Fuel Conditioner is specifically formulated for Diesel, Petrol and Two-stroke fuel systems to clean gums, varnish and carbon deposits, disburse moisture, kill and disburse microbial material whilst increasing lubricity. The by-products of Fuel Doctor’s formulation are increased thermal efficiency equating to a nominal increase in power, economy plus a decrease in particulate (unburnt fuel). Fuel Doctor breaks fuel contaminants into sub-micron particles allowing them to pass safely and harmlessly through the fuel system to combustion, with no detrimental effects to fuel pumps, injectors catalytic converters or particulate filters. Fuel Doctor will stabilise and extend fuel storage life for up to twenty-four months for petrol and five years for diesel.

In Short, it cleans your fuel system, maintains fuel quality, extend the lifetime of fuel pumps & injectors, optimises combustion & increases power. No marketing hype, snake oil or smoke and mirrors here just consistent diligent attention to detail and hard work has given Fuel Doctors a credible edge in a very competitive industry.

Just Fitness – The story behind the gym.

I am writing this article to attest to what hard work can bring you. Not only have the people in this article become a great success by their own hands, they have also returned to South Africa after having built a successful business in the UK.  Below is the story of Charles and Joanne.(Joanne) – Charles and I were born in Johannesburg and moved to the UK in 1999. We arrived in the UK with £600 to our name.  Our new home came with many challenges and there were plenty of times that we thought what have we done! In 2002 Tyron (our son) was born and our lives changed. We travelled a lot and in 2005 we bought our first home.  In the same year we started our own Arboricultural Machinery business.  For the next 14 years we worked very hard and the business became very successful.  In 2015 after an absence of 9 years we returned to South Africa for a holiday. We had to attend a birthday party in PE. Charles had visited PE many times as a youngster but it was the first time for Tyron and myself.  During our holiday we visited Plettenberg Bay and fell in love. We decided we were going to look for a holiday house in Plett.  Went back to the UK, started planning and returned 2 months later to view a series of houses. On our last day, we saw a house listed on the internet in George.  None of us had ever been to George so we didn’t know what to expect.  We instantly fell in love with the area and the house.  We went back to the UK and put an offer on the house.Over the next 5 year we were back and forth between the UK and our house in George.  It became harder and harder to leave and so we made the decision to move back permanently.  In the meantime, Tyron had grown a passion for bodybuilding. Tyron was born at 26 weeks and only weighed 960 grams. Growing up Tyron was the smaller boy but his determination made up for it. At the age of 16 Tyron started showing an interest in bodybuilding. We bought a few bits of gym equipment for a home gym.  It became apparent that bodybuilding wasn’t just a phase!  After training at home for about a year he decided to join a local community gym with Charles. After completing his last year of school, Tyron enrolled in the London Academy of Fitness Professionals. He first completed a diploma in Fitness instruction and then went on to graduate as a level 3 Personal Trainer. During this period Charles and I were trying to decide how we would generate income when we moved to George full time.  We thought of a few different options, Charles would come over, do the homework, come back crunch the numbers and ultimately nothing seemed to tick the boxes.  In 2018 a new chain of gyms opened on our doorstep.  A 24 hour gym, unsupervised during unstaffed hours.  Charles and Tyron joined straight away. It quickly became apparent how a 24 hour gym could be appealing and certainly a viable business opportunity. We started researching gym equipment and contacting suppliers, testing the various equipment until we found what we thought was the best.  By September of 2019 Charles moved to George while I stayed behind to wrap up our life in the UK. There were many sad goodbyes to many of the friends that we had made. Back in SA, Charles was delighted to find the available unit at Paddagat.  It was central, had a vast amount of parking, and members could pop in to do their shopping before or after training. So the building work began, three showers, an office and reception area were built. There was great joy when the rubber flooring arrived, we all sat with our hammers fitting them together.  In February 2020 the long awaited gym equipment arrived from Johannesburg and was installed in a couple of days.  We now had our equipment, and 2 full time staff members.  Tyron with his Level 3 Personal Trainer quantification, Miche who has a degree in Sports Management. Jaco also joined our team later on and is currently busy with Personal Training, Nutrition and Sports Psychology. One of the delivery guys who transported the gym equipment asked if we were looking for a cleaning lady, he introduced us to Cynthia, his wife, and we love her!  The cleanliness of the gym is her passion and mission! On the 12/2/2020 we opened and we were overwhelmed with the response. And then lockdown happened.  We seriously questioned our business choice.  We decided that we would not debit or charge any of our members for the full 5 months that we were locked down.  It was a very frustrating and taxing time but we were not alone.  We joined FITSA and stayed in regular contact with other gym owners, we were all in the same boat. We were allowed to open again on the 18th of August 2020.  We lost a small percentage of our pre lock down customers due to job losses etc… but had many more joining.  We have gone from strength to strength and are looking forward to the future.  Unfortunately we are restricted by the current curfew so our members are not getting the full 24 hour service.  But onwards and upwards! In January 2021 we took a second unit upstairs to install a Virtual studio. We are so blessed to have opened a business in such a beautiful place.  All of our members have done us proud. So many people thought we were crazy to open a 24 hour unsupervised gym in South Africa. We are looking forward to this year and all the opportunities it holds. We as the owners are involved daily with the gym and enjoy building relationships with the members.    – (end)I have personally spent some time with Charles and Joanne and they are great people ready to personally deliver on their service offering at Just Fitness. LAND CRUISER PRADO

Nuwe Enjin, nuwe Toerusting.

Alternative Sport opportunities for kids

Since last year with the start of COVID-19 and lock down in South Africa, the school curriculums and routines have been changed abruptly. And that included the sports as well. With many kids being home these last few months, it’s been a bit of a great challenge to parents. The School year hasn’t started yet, kids get bored at home, parents are occupied by work commitments. It’s been an all-rounder of challenges for parents! And the reality of this year, is also school being on a on-and-off basis with kids only going to school on alternative days. Therefore, Mastering It initiated to start with some sport activities on a weekly basis for school going children! And in so doing, Mastering Sport has been launched! We love investing in people and now we have the opportunity to invest in younger kids as well. We’ve been getting together since last week Monday (25 January 2021) – every Monday and Wednesday at 11h30 – 13h00, at Ground Zero. All Primary School students are welcome! We try to get to a variety of sports in over the weeks and we’ve been keeping the kids busy with cricket, rugby touchies, frisbee, athletics and netball these last 2 weeks. It’s been extremely fun – not only for the kids, but also for us, having the opportunity to get out of the office and getting some fresh air and experiencing nature during working hours!See our flyer for more information or contact Maryke Jooste directly at 072 372 4353 to book your spot! We try and work in some hand-eye-coordination activities as well as this is extremely valuable to the kids. Sport is such an important part of kids’ lives and growing up years. They need to get active, make new friends and all these are possible with some sport activities! While having fun of course!Read more about us on our website.

Stand up for your feet

Most people walk nearly 115,000 miles (about 185 000 km) in their lifetimes – the equivalent of walking around the world five times! One person who knows the toll life can take on someone’s feet is Katy Rowland. “Foot care should be a number-one priority, especially for the more than 20 million Americans with diabetes,” she said. “Diabetes can cause changes in the skin of the feet and nerve damage which impairs the sensation of feeling. It shouldn’t be taken lightly since unhealed diabetic foot ulcers account for more than 60 percent of all nontraumatic lower limb amputations.”As senior vice president of clinical services for National Healing Corporation, Rowland is on the leading edge of foot-wound care for the firm, which manages 20 percent of the nation’s wound healing centres. She offers these tips that everyone can use to put their best foot forward:• Your feet contain 25 percent of all the bones in your body. Buy shoes that fit comfortably without expecting them to stretch to fit. • Most people’s feet are two different sizes. Stand up when having your feet measured so that they are at their maximum width and length. • Your feet contain a quarter of a million sweat glands. You should always wear seamless socks with shoes and change them daily. • Medicare and many health care providers will reimburse a certain amount of money for shoes and custom inserts prescribed by a doctor. Don’t buy more than one insert at a time since the size and shape of your feet may change. • Cut toenails straight across at a length slightly longer than the tips of your toes. Use an emery board to smooth the corners. • Diabetics should never go barefoot and need to inspect the inside of their shoes daily for torn linings and foreign objects. They should also examine their feet each day for blisters, cuts and scratches using a mirror to see the bottoms of their feet. People with a chronic wound, one that has not healed in more than 30 days, should seek medical treatment.
