South African hijackers are now using the ‘tap tap’ method – this is what you should look out for

As many as 45 hijackings incidents take place on South Africa’s roads daily, with criminals constantly finding new ways to dupe the public.Citing the latest SAPS statistics, ADT Fidelity said that most of these hijackings occur in Gauteng (23 per day), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (7 per day) and Western Cape (6 per day).The security company said that approximately 60% of all these hijackings take place close to home, so knowing what to look out for and how to prevent falling prey to hijackers is important to prevent from becoming a victim.Below it outlined a number of safety hints and tips motorists should be aware of:
  • The ‘tap tap’ method: Don’t fall for the “tap tap” trap where a driver taps the back of your car in traffic. They often use lady drivers as decoys here. Never get out of your car on the scene to assess the damage but rather drive to a busy location;
  • Go three houses down: If you suspect you are being followed, put your indicator on and slow down at least two to three houses prior to your home. If you are being followed, you will force the vehicle behind you to pass and this could cause the criminals to lose interest;
  • Leave the key in the ignition: If you need to stop in your driveway to manually open the gate, always leave the key in the ignition and the motor running unless you have a child in the car. Only then should you take the key with you as you open the gate;
  • The back wheels rule: Always make sure you can see the back wheels of the car in front of you when you stop in the traffic. This gives you enough room to manoeuvre and escape.
In a hijackingIn the unfortunate event that you are hijacked, ADT Fidelity said that motorists should do the following:
  • The first and golden rule is to not antagonise the hijackers who are probably more scared than you are. You need to show them you are not a threat;
  • Lift up your arms to show you have no weapon and will surrender. Use your left arm to undo your seatbelt and put your car in neutral;
  • Do not turn off your car, and remember to get out slowly;
  • Also remember to protect your head with your arms and avoid direct eye contact with the hijackers but try to take in what they are wearing, the sound of their voices, etc.

Thembalethu Youth Stand Against Drugs & Murders

In Thursday’s State of the Nation Address, President Cryil Ramaphosa promised that his administration will halve violent crime cases. However, murder rates have increased drastically,  and also noting that murder cases are often connected with drugs in South Africa – it raises a serious concern on the government’s ability to deliver on its promises. While the President’s address is only a promise; the youth of Thembalethu in George have taken a stand against murders and drugs in a peaceful walk on Monday 17 June as part of resembling the youth of 1976 by saying ‘’enough is enough” on crime and substance abuse.The walk was organized by young people of Thembalethu under the name ‘Youth in Action’. Above a hundred youth took part in this walk. One of the organisers of the walk, Snazo Gulwa, had this to say: “Today we have decided that we are going to take a stand as young people of Thembalethu against substance abuse and youth-on-youth killings. This also serves as a warning to those who continue to sell dangerous weapons to young people. We also invited the police to come and accept our petition in which we stated our concerns, and we hope that we will continue to have engagements with regard to these matters.” This walk is encouraging and should continue to make the community aware that these crimes are not acceptable given their escalation since last year.

The model spillway design which was tested at the Department of Water and Sanitation’s Hydraulic Laboratory
“This is a first for George and the Western Cape, the project design is unique and I would like to thank all role-players within George Municipality and externally who started with the planning of this project as far back as December 2008. Given the uncertain impact of climate change and the future expansion of George, I am excited about this project which is part of the Grow George initiative, increasing the storage capacity of this precious resource is a positive step for the future development of George. I wish only success to the project and everyone involved here today,” said Naik.The dam’s full supply level will be raised by 2.5 metres, which will increase the total storage capacity of the dam by approximately 25%.  The current weir height is 179,94m with a volume capacity of about 10.0 million cubic metres.  The new weir height will be 182,5m with a storage capacity of approximately 12,5 million cubic metres. The construction period is still estimated to be ten months from time of contractual commencement and the site and an extended surrounding area remains closed to the public for safety reasons. The  fill for the raising of the dam wall will be excavated on the MTO/NMU side of the dam and transported to the construction site and it is expected that approximately 13 000 cubic meters of material will be transported.

The new spillway will be approximately 80m in length and varies between 3.7m to 4.7m in height (above existing ground levels) and approximately 400 to 600mm thick at the top of new spillway wall. Hydraulic testing on the spillway design was done at the Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) Hydraulic Laboratory in November 2017 and was undertaken to substantiate the computer modelling simulation undertaken by Aurecon. The model tested as calculated and was accepted as such by DWS.

A few safety tips

WRITTEN BY A COP: Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or a loved one’s life. In daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things >to do in an emergency situation… This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children, & everyone you know. After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do :The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!2. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse,……. DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you… Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. AND RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.. The driver won’t see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc.)… DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your HEAD and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE..If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF……. Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF!!!! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes……BAIL OUT AND RUN!!!! It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: A.) BE AWARE… look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor and in the back seat. B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. C.) Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side.. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!!!! Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP!!! It may get you raped or killed. (Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked ‘for help’ into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next VICTIM).9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last and because it was late and she thought it was weird..She called the police. The police told her ‘Whatever you do, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR! The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a windrow and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, ‘We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, do not open the door.’ He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby’s cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby.. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby’s cries outside their doors when they’re home alone at night.10. Water scam! If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe….. DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full blast so that you will go out to investigate and then attack.Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors!I’d like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life. I was going to send this to the ladies only but guys, if you love your mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc…. You may want to pass it onto them. Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or a loved one’s life.

Garden Route District Municipality Roads Department makes history

“The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) has the biggest Roads function in the Western Cape”. This was confirmed by GRDM Executive Manager for Roads Services, Mr John G Daniels at their main office in George on Tuesday, 28 May 2019.According to Mr Daniels, there are many projects in store for the Roads Department over the current and next financial years. Since the Roads Department is an agency function of the Western Cape Government (WCG), its financial year stretches from the beginning of April to the end of March the following year. The current financial year, therefore, already started in April 2019.
The Roads Services budgetMr Daniels confirmed his statement about the magnitude of the Department, when he said that the budget of the Roads Department amounts to over half a billion rand. “This budget is inclusive of the Department’s yellow fleet that amounts to R386 million, which makes us the biggest Roads Department in the Western Cape,” Mr Daniels boasted. The WCG increased the roads services budget from R145 million, last year, to R160 million for this year. The increase of R15 million could only have materialised due to the Department’s good record of expenditure and stable staff complement. “All these characteristics personify the Roads Services function and with everything necessary in place, we plan to spend R200 million again,” Mr Daniels said.Projects in progress and to be implementedOne such project planned for the current and next financial years will be a R21 million project to be implemented in Slangrivier (Hessequa), which is foreseen to commence in August/September this year. Two other projects include the re-gravel and resealing of roads in the entire Garden Route district. The resealing will amount to R23 million and R17 million is budgeted for the re-gravelling project. The road building project in Friemersheim near Mossel Bay, is envisaged to be completed by September 2019. The R39 million project in Gwaiing (George) where the road is upgraded from gravel to tar, will be completed in the next financial year and will stretch over a period of 18 months.Mr Daniels extended a word of appreciation to all the Roads staff by saying: “I thank each and every one of you for your commitment, endurance and work ethic. We made history by spending R200 million for the year!” #GardenRoute #GardenRouteDMRead more here: https://bit.ly/2Xh4G75

Pompjoggie betaal vir petrol

‘n Post van Monet van Heerden is op Georgiete Staan Saam geshare wat ‘n mens se hart laat chocolates klop.Vroeg vanoggend oppad Kaap toe stop ek by ‘n petrolstasie om my kar vol te maak. Voordat ek die persoon vra om my kar vol te maak – kry ek net ‘n gevoel dat ek my kaart by die huis vergeet het. Terwyl ek my kaart soek begin ‘n jong man pligsgetrou my vensters was. Na die soektog sê ek toe vir hom ek kry nie my kaart nie en sal ongelukkig nie petrol kan ingooi nie. Hy sê toe vir my: “Ma’am you can’t run out of petrol on the N2. I’ll throw in R100 and then you can just bring back my R100 whenever you are near again. ” Sonder dat ek nog kan antwoord begin hy petrol ingooi en betaal hy met sy eie kaart. Hy het nie my naam of my nommer gevra nie – net gesê dat ek moet veilig ry. Toe ek die geld vir hom gaan terug gee, het ek hom gevra hoekom hy my gehelp het en hoe hy vertrou het dat ek die geld sal terug bring. Hy antwoord my toe “Ma’am I am a believer.”
Dankie Nkosikho vir jou mooi hart. Jy het vandag vir my hoop gegee vir ons land. Mag Jesus jou lewe bless!
