With this in mind, let us as Georgiete stand together and help people who need our help this festive season.We started LoveGeorge a year ago as a Non profit Company to be able to do just that, to be a vehicle through which we as the George Community can help the needy in George. When we stand together as Georgiete we will be able to help so many more people that cannot afford a simple Xmas dinner.I already have 2 organisations who approached me for assistance in collecting food and or money so that they can give Xmas parties the needy in their communities.

Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) will perform essential maintenance work on the Swartberg Pass (R328 / P0369) for seven (7) weekdays from 27 November till 5 December 2019. Maintenance work will be performed between 09h00 and 15h30. A stop-and-go with delays of up to one hour can be expected. For this reason, road users are requested to plan their trips with the above in mind.Road users can make use of an alternative route between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert via Meiringspoort (N12).Approach roadworks cautiouslyEqually important is the safety of road users. Flag operators in our road maintenance teams are tasked with helping traffic flow smoothly and safely around the affected area. At times where there are no flag operators, road users must obey the traffic signs.A few guidelines1. Approach the construction zone with caution.2. If you are approaching a stop/go control, obey the flag operator. He or she will use hand signals and flags to show if when is your turn to stop and when you can go.3. When vehicles are in front of you as you approach the construction site, slow down, stop if necessary, and remain cautious and observant.4. Obey temporary speed limits at roadwork sites.5. The lane width may be narrower than usual and therefore more hazardous. Road shoulders may be particularly narrow. Be extra careful. Stay in your lane. Do not straddle the lines.6. When moving through a construction site, keep your attention on driving and on other traffic. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by construction activities. This is dangerous and can slow down traffic unnecessarily.7. Watch out for construction equipment, workers, obstacles and debris.Report potholes and road-related issuesRoad users can report potholes and road-related issues to info@gardenroute.gov.za. Please include your name, contact number and location of the pothole in your e-mail. The exact location is very important because this will save us time in finding the pothole and to do the repairs as soon as we can.
Garden Route District Municipality’s (GRDM) Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) from Knysna, Mr Mtetho Sithonga and Ms Mendy Tyhawana, presented an information and awareness session on 13 November 2019 to Informal Food Traders – also known as street vendors. These traders currently run their businesses in the Smutsville/Sizamile areas.According to the traders, they primarily see a spike in business over weekends when they sell braai meat in front of taverns and on street corners.In view of the information and awareness sessions provided by EHPs, Mr Johan Compion, Manager: Municipal Health and Environmental Services, said: “Ongoing health and hygiene education sessions play an essential role in the practices of food traders”. He also confirmed the following: “Improper food handling practices, inadequate temperature control and poor food storage practices, as well as improper cleaning of equipment and utensils, cause foodborne illnesses.”During last week’s session, EHPs focused on the five keys to safer food, compliance issues and incentives for those adhering to food safety standards.The keys to safer food deal primarily with:
Keep clean (dealing mainly with hygiene practises);
Separate raw from cooked food (deals mainly with how to handle and keep raw food and cooked food apart to prevent cross contamination);
Cook food thoroughly (deals mainly with the technique of cooking to ensure all the micro organisms that were in the food are killed);
Keep food at safe temperatures (this key focus on safe temperatures of storing cooked or raw food and the importance of not breaking the cold chain and the consequences of not adhering to that); and
Use safe water and raw materials (importance of knowing the source of the water you use is safe or not safe, if not, how do you ensure that the water is safe. The raw material you use e.g. meat products, vegetables, etc. are from credible sources meaning they are being checked and authorised to trade.)
Mr Mtetho Sithonga, EHP and one of the presenters of the session, said: “Food safety is about producing, handling, storing and preparing food in such a manner, which prevents infection and contamination of food”. It is especially important to have Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for food in the big production chains as well. “In other words, food safety helps to promote good health by ensuring wholesomeness of food,” said Sithonga.The crux of the matter is that education sessions promote the importance of public health. While awareness sessions remind food traders about the importance of a “health first” approach – so do inspections and enforcement. These mechanisms require synergy and ongoing collaboration between the public and private sectors to make things work to the standard it was intended to by law. Strict adherence to standards and best practices is required for every food trader, because they are the final point of sale of foodstuffs.If anyone becomes aware of any suspicious food trading activities, or would like to lodge an anonymous complaint, contact the GRDM Municipal Health Services Department at 044 – 803 1522 or send the details to info@gardenroute.gov.za

We all love the sound of bird song around our gardens. Unfortunately, certain breeds can be problematic when it comes to home maintenance and personal well being. The most prevalent area to give most of us grey hairs when it comes to a bird problems is our homes roof.Birds prefer stable structures that provides good shelter and safety. As a good mountain side offer overhangs and a stable structure to nest in so to does your home roof, chimney and gutters. Now we are left with a range of problems that we would like to deal with in a humane and no fuss manner. I will first list the health risks associated with a bird infestation.Disease and other risks
Histoplasmosis – Fungus, that grows in droppings and carry health risks
Salmonella – Bacteria, in droppings and carry health risks
E.coli – Harmful variation of intestinal bacteria found in birds gut
Onycholysis – Bacteria, from dried bird droppings and carry health risks
Bird Mites – Parasite, that can spread to humans
Fleas – Parasite, that can spread to humans
Flies – Common fly, that can spread above mentioned disease directly to humans
The above mentioned are all harmful to humans and associated with bird infestations. Indicators of fungal and bacterial growth is a sharp smell and unusual number of flies around certain areas of your roof. It is important to note that dried droppings turns into a fine powder over time. This powder is easily spread throughout your house by air vents, air conditioning units or a breeze through you open window. So now we know it does not only smell bad and give us extra work on the weekends but it can also make us ill.Other problems include droppings that need to be cleaned on a weekly basis, paint damage, nesting debris blocking your gutters and plant growth on your roof.What we want to do is stop birds from nesting on the roof. This means attempting to stop birds from considering your roof as a suitable nesting area. Below I will list a few repellents that can stop the problem before it begins.
Predator Decoys
This is an attempt to fool the birds into thinking that there is a natural predator in the area thus keeping them away. Different models of the decoys come with extra features like movement and sound. The more “real” the more effective. These decoys are available at most leading garden retail outlets.
Predator Calls
Similar to the above mentioned you can get a standalone sound playing unit that play predator calls to keep unwanted birds away.Ultrasonic Frequency – These units play high frequency sound that only birds and rodents can hear. The sound disorientates birds making landing harder.
Bird Spikes
Sounds worse than it is. This is a spike strip designed to be placed in preferred landing areas. These spikes strips make landing impossible and the bird will look elsewhere.
Bird Nets
A bird net is placed over possible landing areas. Bird nets are designed to make it hard for the birds to have a stable landing. This will force them to look elsewhere.
Repellent Gel
This gel is nontoxic sticky substance that makes it uncomfortable for the birds to land and sit. A bird tends to keep its feathers clean for flight and will avoid any area with a sticky surface. Some of the gels on the market is scented with a repellent smell.
Repellent Chemicals
Non-toxic and non-lethal these chemical are scented and are mild enough to be used around the property without special permission or approval.
Disturbing the Vision
Birds have very good eye sight that they use to navigate and land. These nifty devices and reflective tape disturb the bird’s eye sight by reflecting light at angles that disorientate the bird’s sense of depth and direction.Weekend Warrior Now for those stubborn birds that have decided to declare war on you weekend warrior efforts. Your first option for “do it yourself” will be trapping. Make it your business to trap the birds and release them back into nature. The down side to this is the effects only last as long as you keep trapping.The second and final option is to call in the professionals. It might cost you more but you will be dealing with someone that will give you certain guarantees depending on the extent of your problem.As with all matters concerning animals and chemicals it is always recommended to get a trained professional to help you with an infestation problem. They have been trained to recognize potential risks and deal with them accordingly.This is a vast subject with many remedies. Contact a professional for more info.
Issued George Municipality, 6 November 2019The raising of the spillway is 75% completed with the spillway wall footings done and the drainage channel cast. The high-pressure grouting is also almost complete, with one final hole remaining to be grouted at the last site inspection visit. All grout tests have passed so far. The process of construction of the new spillway walls has commenced, with the fixing of the wall steel and the grouting in of the anchor bars into the existing spillway retaining walls. The earth embankment wall raising has reached its final height and the finishing work will include the final gravel wearing course layer and installation of the settlement monitoring beacons. Grass seeding of the downstream wall will be concluded soon. The borrow-pit used to obtain the wall material has been trimmed and will receive rehabilitation work over the next month.The Municipality has completed a series of controlled burns to clear alien vegetation in those areas that pose a fire risk surrounding the dam site, with a further burn planned in February 2020 in the area directly surrounding the dam wall area (subject to weather conditions).The planned Cape Agency for Sustainable Integrated Development in Rural Areas (CASIDRA) managed alien vegetation clearing operation for a width of approximately 50m along the stream edge of the Kat and Swart River systems upstream of the dam is expected to start in early 2020. Heavy construction vehicles are currently still operating on both the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) / Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and George sides of the dam wall, this includes the harvesting of lumber in the DEFF area. The required signage is in place to warn the public that the area is a construction site and only authorised persons are permitted to access this area wearing the correct safety clothing. The Municipality sincerely thanks the majority of its residents for adhering to the restrictions as this allows construction to continue without undue interruption and additional safety, financial and program risks. Regrettably there are still a number of cyclists/residents who continue to ignore the warning signage at extreme risk to their own lives.All enquiries must please be referred to Gvanniekerk@george.gov.za for feedback and comment.Photographs: Adrian Van Molendorf
The defence of one’s person or interests, especially through the use of physical force, which is permitted in certain cases as an answer to a charge of violent crime. (https://www.dictionary.com)When I first introduce people to self defence I am either met with enthusiasm or two common responses. The most frequent response I get from people is “Why do I need to know self defence?” only second to “I can handle myself.” So, let’s address the first response, the why? Not only is it your right but also your duty towards yourself. You only have one life, why not know how to protect yourself? Security is one of the fundamental human needs and self defence forms part of it.Once this is made clear the next objection in that line is “I don’t have hand eye coordination” or “I struggle to learn movements”. The answer here is a simple one. A good self defence instructor will be able to teach you how to use your natural movements to defend yourself. Yes, self defence is all about natural movement. High flying kicks and complicated grappling movements are reserved for people in combat sports or entertainment. As a lifelong student of combat arts I can recommend combat sports for self defence, as a basis to learn movements and understand what your body is capable of. Unfortunately with the majority of arts leaning more towards sports the actual self defence aspect of the art is diluted into a point scoring system.The main question: How effective is martial arts or combat sports as a self defence tool. Answer: This depends on your instructor. Mc Dojo and “glory hog” instructors only want your money and end up teaching you exactly what you feel comfortable with.Note: Self defence is not a competition, show of skills or activity to soothe one’s ego. Self defence is a very raw “fight” to escape an attack with your life and physical wellbeing intact.The “fight” referred to in my previous statement relates to an attack on you and the struggle within you to make the right decisions during a very stressful situation. Part of self defence training is learning how to weigh your options in a violent situation. Questions like “do I run, fight or follow instructions?” are but some of the skills you learn. Before you follow any advice remember that a violent situation is very unpredictable and almost always turns out differently than you might have thought. Now let’s take on the second most popular response.“I can handle myself.” That’s good news, so what do you do when you wake up in the middle of the night and 3 masked people are pinning you down in your own bed. No.., let’s take an easy example. One random person confronts you in the street and you can handle yourself. What do you do, let’s weigh the options. You see no weapon so you decide to tell the person off. The person then pulls out a knife and stabs at you. You have no pre trained response to a knife attack and used the wrong defensive movement, now you are in trouble… This situation can have many variables like a different weapon, more people hiding nearby, hate crime intent… and the list goes on. See, you just don’t know when, how or if you will be attacked. Heck, I have done this for a long time and I am not even fully prepared for a violent attack 100% of the time.Most of what you do during a violent situation comes automatic, which means application of a pre trained response or idea. A pre trained response is either something you have seen, read or even training you have received. During an attack only highly experienced practitioners can pre determine possible movement. -Do not be mistaken, this takes years to master and happens in a split second-Let’s do a quick recap of the above.
Self defence is a basic human need categorized under Safety
Self defence is based on natural movement
Most combat sports are for entertainment purpose
Your combat sport needs to teach self defence application (all arts have it, ask your instructor)
You don’t really know how you will respond to a violent situation
You are facing your attacker and yourself (own mind) during a violent attack
Only through training can you determine the correct response
Violence is unpredictable and almost always turns out different than your initial thoughts
So, why self defence?Self defence is more than just twisting a wrist or a knee to the gut. During self defence training you learn what you can and cannot do either mentally and physically. You also learn when to run, fight or follow instructions. You even learn how to walk, talk and listen. Self defence also deals with your mental state and how to face challenges on a daily basis. I am making self defence sound nice and clean but remember that you will also be taught how to seriously injure another person. I am not going to make this article to graphic but you will get the chills when you hear stories of violent crime victims and what they needed to do in order to escape with their lives. Yes, the actual training and participation is fun and games but the real life application can be quite dark.Now for some homework:This is a need to know for every human. Read as much as you can on the Flight, Fight and Freeze response. I will do a follow up article covering the subject.
