Helping the needy this Xmas.

A friend taught me this lesson not so long ago: “On your own you can run fast, but together as a group – you can go further”! With this in mind, let us as Georgiete stand together and help people who need our help this festive season.We started LoveGeorge a year ago as a Non profit Company to be able to do just that, to be a vehicle through which we as the George Community can help the needy in George. When we stand together as Georgiete we will be able to help so many more people that cannot afford a simple Xmas dinner.I already have 2 organisations who approached me for assistance in collecting food and or money so that they can give Xmas parties the needy in their communities.
Please contact me if you can assist by donating raw food like meat and or veggies. You can also deposit any amount into our NPC account. A R100 deposit can buy 2 proper meals! Please make sure that you mark it XMAS2019 so that we can make sure it will go the correct people. Any surplus money that is marked XMAS2019 will be used to bless someone this season from Georgiete!Love George – Love our city – Love our people. Notification of essential maintenance work planned for Swartberg Pass

Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) will perform essential maintenance work on the Swartberg Pass (R328 / P0369) for seven (7) weekdays from 27 November till 5 December 2019. Maintenance work will be performed between 09h00 and 15h30.  A stop-and-go with delays of up to one hour can be expected. For this reason, road users are requested to plan their trips with the above in mind.Road users can make use of an alternative route between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert via Meiringspoort (N12).Approach roadworks cautiously Equally important is the safety of road users. Flag operators in our road maintenance teams are tasked with helping traffic flow smoothly and safely around the affected area. At times where there are no flag operators, road users must obey the traffic signs.A few guidelines 1. Approach the construction zone with caution. 2. If you are approaching a stop/go control, obey the flag operator. He or she will use hand signals and flags to show if when is your turn to stop and when you can go. 3. When vehicles are in front of you as you approach the construction site, slow down, stop if necessary, and remain cautious and observant. 4. Obey temporary speed limits at roadwork sites. 5. The lane width may be narrower than usual and therefore more hazardous. Road shoulders may be particularly narrow. Be extra careful. Stay in your lane. Do not straddle the lines. 6. When moving through a construction site, keep your attention on driving and on other traffic. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by construction activities. This is dangerous and can slow down traffic unnecessarily. 7. Watch out for construction equipment, workers, obstacles and debris.Report potholes and road-related issues Road users can report potholes and road-related issues to info@gardenroute.gov.za. Please include your name, contact number and location of the pothole in your e-mail. The exact location is very important because this will save us time in finding the pothole and to do the repairs as soon as we can.

Smutsville and Sizamile Street Vendors receive training

0
Garden Route District Municipality’s (GRDM) Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) from Knysna, Mr Mtetho Sithonga and Ms Mendy Tyhawana, presented an information and awareness session on 13 November 2019 to Informal Food Traders – also known as street vendors. These traders currently run their businesses in the Smutsville/Sizamile areas.According to the traders, they primarily see a spike in business over weekends when they sell braai meat in front of taverns and on street corners.In view of the information and awareness sessions provided by EHPs, Mr Johan Compion, Manager: Municipal Health and Environmental Services, said: “Ongoing health and hygiene education sessions play an essential role in the practices of food traders”.  He also confirmed the following: “Improper food handling practices, inadequate temperature control and poor food storage practices, as well as improper cleaning of equipment and utensils, cause foodborne illnesses.”During last week’s session, EHPs focused on the five keys to safer food, compliance issues and incentives for those adhering to food safety standards.The keys to safer food deal primarily with:
  1. Keep clean (dealing mainly with hygiene practises);
  2. Separate raw from cooked food (deals mainly with how to handle and keep raw food and cooked food apart to prevent cross contamination);
  3. Cook food  thoroughly (deals mainly with the technique of cooking to ensure all the micro organisms  that were in the food are killed);
  4. Keep food at safe temperatures (this key focus on safe temperatures of storing cooked or raw food and the importance of not breaking the cold chain and the consequences of not adhering to that); and
  5. Use safe water and raw materials (importance of knowing the source of the water you use is safe or not safe, if not, how do you ensure that the water is safe. The raw material you use e.g. meat products, vegetables, etc. are from credible sources meaning they are being checked and authorised to trade.)
Mr Mtetho Sithonga, EHP and one of the presenters of the session, said: “Food safety is about producing, handling, storing and preparing food in such a manner, which prevents infection and contamination of food”. It is especially important to have Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for food in the big production chains as well. “In other words, food safety helps to promote good health by ensuring wholesomeness of food,” said Sithonga.The crux of the matter is that education sessions promote the importance of public health. While awareness sessions remind food traders about the importance of a “health first” approach – so do inspections and enforcement. These mechanisms require synergy and ongoing collaboration between the public and private sectors to make things work to the standard it was intended to by law. Strict adherence to standards and best practices is required for every food trader, because they are the final point of sale of foodstuffs.If anyone becomes aware of any suspicious food trading activities, or would like to lodge an anonymous complaint, contact the GRDM Municipal Health Services Department at 044 – 803 1522 or send the details to info@gardenroute.gov.za

Agri-werker wen gesogde toekenning
