Onthou die Lesse van Lockdown

0
  • Lockdown has given us the opportunity to take life a little more slowly, to appreciate the things we often take for granted, and to re-evaluate our priorities.
  • We truly can adapt to overcome obstacles if we apply ourselves to it.
  • As gevolg van elke trial, kon ek soveel meer groei in die Confidence wat ek het in die Here as my Shepherd, Pappa en Beste Vriend.
  • The year 2020 has reminded me of how important it is to stay connected. Connection with others is so important and without it, it changes who we are: I became closer to my family and friends and I will forever be grateful for that little push that this year gave me!

Lock down uitdagings vir Ouers – 5

Mastering It en Mariska Knoetze het dit goed gevind om tydens die lock down, wat reeds Maart die jaar begin het, ‘n Video reeks aan ouers beskikbaar te maak wat verskeie relevante kwessies rondom Lock down aanspreek. In hierdie onderstaande artikel deel Mariska meer oor: A. Mensdom is negatief, opstokerig, kritiek, fopnuus, vrese, sosiale media, en B. Juffrou, mamma, vrou, skoonmaker terwyl pappa moet werk (of visa-versa); Of as enkel-ouer

Ek is Mariska Knoetze.
Juffrou, mamma, vrou, skoonmaker terwyl pappa moet werk (of visa-versa). Of as enkel-ouer. Navorsing toon dan “multi-tasking” eintlik minder produktief is.  Juis omdat daar bv. 5 take onvoltooid is.Dan moet ek bysê dat ek self lekker aandagafleibaar is.
Vegetable Garden

LoveGeorge today handed over gardening tools to Pastor Amos Moyikwa from Thembalethu. This is a pilot project for LoveGeorge’s Nutritional Centre drive which they are establishing with Eden Lions, Die Vryburgers and other NGO’s in the LoveGeorge Network. We realise that we cannot continue to just hand out food parcels to families and soup kitchens, we need to establish sustainable vegetable gardens at the food centres so that there can be a constant supply of fresh vegetables for the feeding centres.

No fireworks for Guy Fawkes

The George Municipality reminds residents and visitors that fireworks, fire crackers, flares, paper lanterns and other such paraphernalia are considered a major fire risk and are not allowed in public or private spaces in the municipal area.George Acting Fire Chief Neels Barnard said the George Municipality Public Safety and Nuisance bylaws, overall fire safety and disaster management regulations, and ongoing dry and hot conditions of the Western Cape fire season were all reasons why fireworks remained banned in the municipal area. The selling of fireworks is also illegal, and no such permits have been issued or will be issued by the George Municipality. The illegal trading, possession and/or setting off of fireworks carry fines of R300 and fireworks will be confiscated. Such activities can be reported on the numbers below. While the current municipal bylaw mentions application for a permit for professional pyrotechnic shows, the George Fire Department reiterates that no such permits have been issued for years and are extremely unlikely to be issued in the foreseeable future. The George Municipal Disaster Centre stressed that there had not been designated sites for fireworks in the George municipal area for years and was unlikely to be reinstated, despite public tradition to ‘self-designate’ certain areas such as beaches, parks and streetsPaper lanterns hold duel concern. In addition to the risk of blowing and dropping out of sight and catching fire in vegetation or on flammable material before it is extinguished, paper lanterns also waste resources when rescue services are incorrectly alerted to an ‘emergency flare’.The public must please understand that any kind of spark or heat holds a threat – while fireworks, flares and lanterns are being highlighted, the appeal is for responsible, fire-aware action throughout. Please exercise extreme caution always, make fires only in protected and designated areas, and dispose of cigarette butts safely. Please report illegal trade and setting off of fireworks in George to Law Enforcement at 044 801 6350 or after hours at 044 801 6300.Please report illegal, irresponsible and unsafe fires to the Fire Department on 044 801 6300.FIRE EMERGENCIES: 044 801 6311Press Release: Issued George Municipality, 5 November 2020DOWNLOAD OUR NEW APP! The Best is yet to come

Connect more ~ Live more ~ Breathe more 2 months remaining of the year!

What an interesting year to reflect on! Less than 2 months remaining as we are already a few days into November. Here in George we are still kinda stuck in winter if we look at the weather and the predictions made going forward. But not everything always works out as it should, right?
But rainy days are good days for hot food, hot drinks and catching up on some reading. You spare your beach outings for sunshiny days! There is something good in everything we got, everything we go through and everything that doesn’t go according to plan. This makes me think about marriage – your partner being so different to yourself and brings unique elements to the package. As for myself, those who know me, I am a very organised person who likes planning ahead. My husband, on the other hand, is very spontaneous. This makes for a good hiccup now and again! My black and white side cringed quite a lot at the beginning of our marriage. But now, being happily married for 2 years, I start to enjoy moments of spontaneity and doing things outside of the box.
This just shows how adaptable one can be.
And this was a trait needed for most, probably close to all, of us for the year 2020. We all made plans. We all had the ambition of “This is going to be a year for GREAT things!”. And then the unexpected struck. Bound to our houses. Bound to our own thought patterns. Bound to way to much online and screen time than intended.
We had a lot of tough and negative circumstances to face and witness. It was in many conversations and COVID results were all over the news. But recently I asked the Mastering It team to share some of the good that came out of their year so far and this is some of the responses I got:
So may the year 2020 remind us of our strengths and that we are capable of more than we think. May we be encouraged to see the best in everything and keep on pursuing those things we are passionate about.
This year might only have little than 2 months remaining but in those little than 2 months we’ll have enough time to start a new hobby, plan for desires for 2021 or start volunteering at a local NPO.
Put in the last efforts to get the best out of 2020!

The dangers of putting your children on Ritalin

UsesThis medication is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – ADHD. It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain. Methylphenidate belongs to a class of drugs known as stimulants. It can help increase your ability to pay attention, stay focused on an activity, and control behavior problems. It may also help you to organize your tasks and improve listening skills. This medication is also used to treat a certain sleep disorder (narcolepsy). How to use RitalinRead the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking methylphenidate and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 2 or 3 times a day. This medication is best taken 30 to 45 minutes before a meal. However, if you have stomach upset, you may take this medication with or after a meal or snack. Taking this medication late in the day may cause trouble sleeping (insomnia).Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may direct you to gradually increase or decrease your dose. Also, if you have used it for a long time, do not suddenly stop using this drug without consulting your doctor. If you suddenly stop using this medication, you may have withdrawal symptoms (such as depression, suicidal thoughts, or other mental/mood changes). To help prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly. Withdrawal is more likely if you have used methylphenidate for a long time or in high doses. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have withdrawal. When used for a long time, this medication may not work as well. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well.Though it helps many people, this medication may sometimes cause addiction. This risk may be higher if you have a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol). Take this medication exactly as prescribed to lower the risk of addiction. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.Side EffectsNervousness, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, weight loss, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or headache may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. What absolute hog wash !!!!! Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. This is not true This medication may raise your blood pressure. Check your blood pressure regularly and tell your doctor if the results are high.Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: signs of blood flow problems in the fingers or toes (such as coldness, numbness, pain, or skin color changes), unusual wounds on the fingers or toes, fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat, mental/mood/behavior changes (such as agitation, aggression, mood swings, abnormal thoughts, thoughts of suicide), uncontrolled muscle movements (such as twitching, shaking), sudden outbursts of words/sounds that are hard to control, vision changes (such as blurred vision).Get medical help right away if you have any very serious side effects, including: fainting, seizure, symptoms of a heart attack (such as chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating), symptoms of a stroke (such as weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, sudden vision changes, confusion).Rarely, males (including young boys and teens) may have a painful or prolonged erection lasting 4 or more hours while using this medication. Caregivers/parents should also be watchful for this serious side effect in boys. If a painful or prolonged erection occurs, stop using this drug and get medical help right away, or permanent problems could occur. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacistTHE HISTORY SINCE 1971  Despite its popularity, Ritalin quickly became controversial. Critics attacked the drug and its effects as well as what it and ADHD represented. Was Ritalin a silver bullet or black magic? An initial concern centred on the drug’s similarity to illegal amphetamines, (the modern day “Tik”)such as speed. As with other medical drugs, Ritalin quickly developed a parallel life as a street drug.In 1971, a task force on drug abuse reported to the US Senate that Ritalin was causing trouble in many US cities. In Seattle, it was described as the number one drug abuse problem.Ritalin became a street drug, with some people injecting it. Syda Productions/ShutterstockRather than taking the drug orally, as intended, users would dissolve Ritalin and inject it. The task force also reported “children swapping their pills in the schoolyard with unfortunate effects”. In response, Ritalin’s manufacturer (now Ciba-Geigy) said they were unaware of the abuse of their product and that reclassifying the drug would stigmatise patients. While ADHD remained primarily a North American diagnosis during the 1970s, the abuse of Ritalin in Sweden was such that the drug was banned.Critics also highlighted Ritalin’s side effects. Although Ritalin was marketed in part on the basis that it was safe, ads warned of possible insomnia, depression, anorexia, stunted growth, bed-wetting, irritability, heart problems and hallucinations.A 1971 study that compared Ritalin to stronger stimulants and an antipsychotic drug found that while its side effects were less frequent, they could be severe. One child experienced hallucinations that worms were crawling over him, only to return to normal when he stopped taking Ritalin. To avoid Ritalin’s side effects, some physicians advocated taking “drug holidays” during summer and Christmas breaks. Others recommended prescribing safer stimulants, such as caffeine. Still others recommended prescribing more drugs to deal with the side effects, including growth hormones and antidepressants.By the 1970s, Ciba-Geigy’s aggressive advertising strategy was also questioned. As well as the many ads in medical journals – some of which ran to seven pages – the company marketed directly to consumers. It organised community meetings to promote their product to parents and teachers, distributed publications widely and produced a film called “The Hyperactive Child”. Salesmen were also encouraged to target probation officers and juvenile court officers.Although the FDA eventually restricted these direct methods, Ritalin sales continued to grow. But this very success led to new criticism about the overdiagnosis of ADHD and the over prescription of Ritalin. As early as 1970, the Washington Post reported that 10% of students in Omaha, Nebraska were taking Ritalin and related drugs, spurring Congressional hearings. A 1976 report claimed that in Minneapolis, Minnesota, African American students were especially singled out for medication.Prescriptions for Ritalin and other ADHD medications in the US escalated from 400,000 in 1980 to 2.6m in 1995. One reason for these increases was the broadening of the concept of ADHD.Although ADHD had been associated with hyperactive boys, a renewed emphasis on inattention shifted the focus on girls who caused few problems in the classroom but were still struggling academically. ADHD also became understood as a lifelong, rather than a childhood, affliction, resulting in the concept of “adult ADHD”.More recently, illicit use of Ritalin as a study aid has triggered renewed controversy. Reports describe young people “faking” ADHD symptoms to get a prescription for the drug to improve academic performance. In some cases, the drug has been a gateway to other drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine. While the objections to Ritalin mounted, many patients, parents and doctors believed that its benefits outweighed the risks. Globally, the use of ADHD drugs increased as the concept of ADHD spread around the world. Iceland, not the US, now has the highest per capita rates of Ritalin use. But the crux of the matter remained: was it right to drug children to improve their behaviour and school performance?Retirement or re-birth?This summer, a new study threatens to cast doubt on Ritalin once again. It found that taking Ritalin for four months changed the white matter in children’s brains. In a press release, Liesbeth Reneman, a senior author on the paper said: “What our data already underscore is that the use of ADHD medications in children must be carefully considered until more is known about the long-term consequences of prescribing methylphenidate at a young age.”(The Conversation approached Novartis – the current makers of Ritalin – for a comment on the study but did not receive a reply.)The white matter study highlights that we don’t know enough about the long-term effects of Ritalin. Few studies have addressed this issue, despite long-term use of the drug. But even if this study’s results are replicated, would this be enough to convince people that Ritalin’s risks outweigh the promised benefits of academic and career success? Two opposing arguments have emerged about the future of Ritalin. The first is that ADHD drugs should be made available for everyone’s benefit.Advocates of neuroenhancement argue that we should welcome the potential improvements to our lives promised by drugs such as Ritalin. By making Ritalin more widely available, we could all benefit from improved focus and performance. We can get more done and be more effective. In Silicon Valley, for instance, people are taking nootropics, or brain-enhancing drugs, to get ahead. But do we want to live in a world where we need neuroenhancement to be happy and successful? Advocates of neurodiversity argue that we should dismiss the concept of ADHD altogether, binning Ritalin along with it.The term neurodiversity was coined in 1988 by Australian sociologist Judy Singer. It means that neurological differences should be recognised and respected. Rather than using drugs to change the behaviour associated with disorders, such as ADHD and autism, society should be more accommodating of neurologically diverse people.Underlying neurodiversity is the idea that we need a wide variety of people to have successful societies. This is especially true as we try to resolve existential issues, such as climate change. One example of neurodiversity making a difference is the teenage Swedish climate change advocate, Greta Thunberg, who has been diagnosed with ADHD and autism. It is likely that Thunberg’s unconventional approach – and her success – is partly because she thinks differently to a “neurotypical” person. So will Ritalin play an essential part in building a neuroenhanced society? Or will greater acceptance of neurodiversity render it irrelevant? Although Ritalin may continue to play a role as a smart drug, I hope that people like Greta Thunberg convince us that we will ultimately be more successful by encouraging neurodiversity. With acknowledgment to :   Kind RegardsDana Niemand   Director

Lock down uitdagings vir Ouers – 4

Mastering It en Mariska Knoetze het dit goed gevind om tydens die lock down, wat reeds Maart die jaar begin het, ‘n Video reeks aan ouers beskikbaar te maak wat verskeie relevante kwessies rondom Lock down aanspreek. In hierdie onderstaande artikel deel Mariska meer oor:

A. Stres van sonder inkomste wees, en B. Huismoles. Familielede of eggenoot se ware kleure kom uit.  Kindermishandeling.  Geen kos om te eet nie.

Ek is Mariska Knoetze.
A. Stresvol – geen inkomste nieJulle hier wil ek graag meer geestelik met jou praat as feitetlik. Huismoles. Familielede of eggenoot se ware kleure kom uit.  Kindermishandeling.

POWA – 076 694  5911

Illegal Dumping awareness session

Following an Illegal Dumping Awareness session that was held at Thembalethu Community Hall last Saturday 31 October, it was clear that illegal dumping is a big problem and health hazard in George and without the help of the local communities the Municipalities will not be able to keep up with the cleaning of dumps, as it is not financially viable. The Executive Mayor of George, Alderman Leon van Wyk, said in his address to the stakeholders present, “we can only win this war on waste when we have plans in place to sustain our efforts in addressing illegal dumping.
Cllr Khayalethu Lose (GRDM), Aldm Memory Booysen (Mayor of GRDM) and Aldm Leon van Wyk (Mayor of George) watching the presentation at the event.
Van Wyk said it became evident during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic that illegal dumping in areas such as Thembalethu and Pacaltsdorp was becoming a serious health concern. “We were advised to take action and source funding to undertake the cleaning up of sites. From a George Municipality perspective we appreciate any kind of assistance from government institutions as well as the private sector is highly welcomed and appreciated.” Van Wyk said it is indeed wonderful that the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) and the George Municipality are working together to clean dumping sites. He said we need to take pride in our homes, properties and areas in which we live. There are many dangers and negative effects that arise from dumping. It becomes a health risk to humans and animals.
Members from the Sikhulasonke project is a non-profit organisation based in Thembalethu community. The organisation assists the community by beautifying some of the dumping sites, as they would like communities to look clean, safe and green. They are currently busy on site in Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
The Municipality assisted the members with working materials to clean the sites and beautify it. In front from left are Nokuthula Gumana, Khanyisa Angel Dukumbana, Sivuyile Adams and Ethan Stoffels (George Mun). At the back are Cllr Khayalethu Lose, Aldm Memory Booysen, Lunga Pieters, Wonga Luke, Tanja Botha (George Mun), Grace Notshokovu, (George Mun) Karin Stoffels (George Mun) and Aldm Leon van Wyk.
Van Wyk said these problems also need to be addressed at national government level in terms of advertising and education. He said municipalities will never have enough funding at any stage to end illegal dumping. “We need to work together to eliminate dumping. The City of Cape Town spends hundreds of millions of rand on addressing illegal dumping. George Municipality struggles  to allocate R10 million every financial year. If we didn’t have to spend this money on clearing dumping, it could be spent on other important services such as, playground equipment, sport and assistance to small and micro businesses.
Stakeholders at the event are in front from left, Cllr Jenny Hartnick (GRDM), Grace Notshokovu (George Municipality), Cllr Khayalethu Lose. At the back are Ethan Stoffels (George Mun), Bonisile Desha (Programme Director), Cllr Joslyn Johnson (GRDM), Cllr Iona Kritzinger (George Mun), Aldm Memory Booysen (GRDM), Aldm Leon van Wyk (George Mun), Cllr Erica Brown ( George Mun), Tanja Botha (George Mun), Karin Stoffels (George Mun) and Radie Loubser (George Mun).
Alderman Memory Booysen, Executive Mayor of the GRDM, said in his address that we will show the rest of South Africa, starting in George, that we can be the safest, cleanest district in the country. Booysen said the project will be rolled out to the rest of the district and he, the Mayor of Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) pledges his continuous support to this operation.Radie Loubser, Senior Manager: Environmental Services at George Municipality said he is an advocate to get the communities involved together with the buy-in of councillors. He said people should be made aware of the problem through the help of councillors. Dumping is illegal and a big health hazard.Loubser said people should be informed and educated on the problem and how to address it and law enforcement should enforce punishment with the issuing of fines.A presentation was made by Johan Gie, Waste Management at GRDM where the challenges, requirements and costs of the project were explained.
